Rappelling and anchor gear, Ropes and or pull cords for rappels up
to 170 feet and 80 feet of 1 inch webbing for sling placement.
Several of the drops in Eastern Sun are anchored from
debris that may wash out during floods. With that in mind you may need
to be a little creative with anchors as mother nature changes things up from
time to time. The need for creative anchor building is why
Eastern Sun is rated a 4 in technical difficulty.
Thanks to Kip Marshall for showing this route to us.
Stay tuned for a first descent trip report coming to the
Canyon Collective
soon.
Eastern Sun starts outside of the park boundary but the
technical portion is well within the park boundary so permits are required.
Eastern Sun is a not so often visited canyon.
Travel in water courses or use trails where possible to avoid land wear,
pack it in - pack it out and clean up any un-needed anchor material to keep
impact to a minimum.
Warning:
The dirt portion of the North Fork Road can become impassable with rain.
The road has a lot of clay content and becomes very slick with just a little
rain. Even 4WD vehicles quickly become useless. If there is a
high likelihood of rain, consider opting out of this route that day.
Afternoon showers at some times of the year can create an impassable road in
under an hour. How do I know this? We got stuck overnight only 0.5 miles from pavement
(4WD vehicles included).
To get to the Trailhead
From the East Gate of Zion National Park, travel 2.4 miles east
on highway 9 to the turn for North Fork (wEngDP-01). Turn Left (north)
toward North Fork.
Drive 5.4 miles on the paved North Fork Road to where the pavement ends (wBirchHlwDP-01).
This is a few hundred feet past the turn for the Ponderosa
Ranch.
From the turn off for the Ponderosa Ranch continue on the now
dirt North Fork Road for 3.1 miles to a large turn out on the
left (west) side of the road which is the trailhead for Birch
Hollow (tBirchHollow), where you will note a large kiosk placed
at the trailhead.
Continue on the North Fork road for 3 miles to a turn off (extOrderville) on the left
(west) for the Upper Orderville Trailhead.
Continue on
the North Fork Road for 1.6 miles to a turn off (extCotageWoods)
on the right (east) that goes up to a community called Cottages
in the Woods.
Continue on the North
Fork Road for 0.9 miles to a turn off (pkBulloch1) on the left
with a brown road marker signed as 90 and 92. If you are
driving a passenger vehicle and do not have high clearance or
4WD find a place to park here to start the approach toward
Bulloch Canyon.
At this parking spot / junction in the road (pkBulloch1) you are
ready to start the route except for needing to go set the exit
vehicle. See the next part for directions for setting the
exit vehicle.
Note:
The North Fork road is dirt and usually in good enough condition
for a standard passenger car to travel unless muddy from recent
rains. So passenger cars will normally be able to get to this
point. You can drive in farther down this route but will
require high clearence to do so. The route description
here describes walking the rougher portion of the road.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
From the entry point parking spot (pkBulloch1) on North
Fork Road it is about 3.8 miles one way (7.6 miles round trip) to go set the exit
vehicle at the Upper Trailhead for the Narrows. There are a couple
spots along the North Fork road from here to the Upper Narrows Trailhead
that can be a little rough at times. A vehicle with high clearance may
be a good idea beyond this point but standard passenger vehicles can make it
just fine when the roads are in good shape and careful driving is
administred.
From the entry parking spot (pkBulloch1) veer right (northeast) and
continue on the North Fork Road 2.8 miles to a signed turn off (ExtNarowsTopTH)
for the Upper Narrows Trailhead.
Turn left at the turn off and drive west 0.4 miles to a gate
(tNarrowsGate1). Drive through the gate and close it
behind you.
Continue west another 0.4 miles to a fork in the road
(wNarrowsDP-01) with a sign saying left to go to the upper
trailhead for the Virgin River Narrow.
Turn left at the fork and drive about 700 feet to the upper
trailhead for the Virgin River Narrows (tNarrowsTop). Park here
to leave the Exit Vehicle. After parking the exit vehicle
go back to the entry parking spot to begin the route.

The Approach:
From turn off (pkBulloch1) of the North Fork Road for the approach
for Bulloch Canyon walk southwest on the road marked as 90 and 92.
About 600 feet from the North Fork Road will be a fork in the road
(wBullochRP-01). Stay left and the fork.
About 550 feet farther will be a road (wBullochRP-02) joining in
from the right (north) that can easily be over looked due to the
angle of approach.
About 0.9 miles farther is another fork in the road (pkBulloch2).
This fork is about 1.2 miles after leaving the North Fork Road.
When walking in on the approach for Bulloch Canyon turn right
(north) at this fork.
Note:
If you have high clearance and 4WD this is where you can park to
begin the route. Driving farther is possible but the road
quickly deteriorates and is not recommended.
About 600 feet down this road you may notice a faint road joining in
from the left(south). Continue past the faint road and stay on
the more obvious road continuing west). As you continue the
condition of the road quickly deteriorates in spots making short
sections of the road harder to follow but over all the road is easy
to follow.
About 1.1 miles down farther the road goes sharply around a corner to the left
(jDakotaHill) and begins to drop south down toward
Walker Gulch. A game trail leaves the road here and
continues west up a ridge from here toward Dakota Hill.
To follow the Dakota Hill
ridge toward Bulloch,
Eastern Son or Checkerboard
Canyons, leave the road here
and start up the trail to
the west toward Dakota Hill.
Note:
To
follow the road over toward
Walker Gulch, Esplin Gulch
or Squeeze Play, stay on the
road and continue down to
the south.
About 100 feet up the
trail (DakotaRdgRP01)
is a point where a minor
ridge joins the the main
Dakota Ridge. The minor
ridge drops down to the
south. Continue west up
Dakota Ridge.
There is vegetation to
push through in places
as you travel this part
of Dakota Ridge but not
too thick to make
travel a hassle.
It does get in the way
of what you can see at
times so you may find
your self trying to see
which way the ridge
goes.
Continue northwest
following the ridge for
about 0.25 miles to high
point on the ridge
(DakotaRdgRP02).
From the high point
(DakotaRdgRP02) the
ridge turns left and
begins to go up to the
southwest.
Note:
The Deadeye Dick
drainage is visible to
the north. It is
possible to drop down
into Deadeye Dick from
the saddle near here but
not the best option.
To continue toward
Dakota Hill veer left
and follow the ridge to
the southwest where it
is mostly rolling up and
down. Travel about
0.25 miles to the top
out on Dakota Hill (pDakotaHill).
From the top out on
Dakota Hill continue
southwest along the
ridge as it gently
slopes downward.
About 500 feet from the
peak the ridge starts to
drop off rapidly (jSalamander1).
From this point notice
two ridges running down
from here; one to the
west and the other to
the south. To continue
to Eastern Sun,
Checkerboard Canyon or
the Paper Bag Fork of
Bulloch Canyon veer
right and follow down
the ridge running west.
Note:
If your route is to go
to Salamander Fork of
Bulloch Canyon you would
drop down southwest
between the two ridges.
About 750 feet farther
west will be a minor top
out along the ridge
(DakotaRdgRP03).
Continue west about 0.22
miles along the ridge
over to a larger peak
(DakotaRdgRP04).
As you approach this
peak route find your way
along the right (north)
side of the peak then
begin to follow the
ridge running down to
the northwest.
Continue northwest down
the ridge for about 900
feet to a saddle
(DakotaRdgRP05).
Continue northwest up
the ridge for about 0.2
miles to another peak
along the ridge
(jEastrnSun).
The ridgeline here veers
left and travels
southwest. Eastern Sun
Canyon can be seen down
to the northwest. To
drop down into Eastern
Sun leave the ridge here
and drop northwest down
toward Eastern Sun.
375 feet west of here is
where you will enter the
Zion National Park by
crossing the boundary
line.
Note:
If you were continuing
along Dakota Ridge you
would veer left
and follow the main
almost level ridge to
the southwest.
About 0.22 miles down
the slope after leaving
the ridgeline you will
be down in the drainage
for Eastern Sun and find
a scramble down of about
6 feet (wEastrnSunRP01)
as you work your way
through a bunch of white
rock debris.
About 0.25 miles down
the wash is a barbed
wire fence
(wEastrnSunRP02) to
cross under. This
spot is about 0.2 miles
inside the park boundary
so welcome to Zion
National Park
backcountry.
About 700 feet farther a
side drainage
(wEastrnSunRP03) joins
in from LDC (west).
This is a few hundred
feet after walking along
a sidewalk like feature
in the wash.
About 0.2 miles down the
wash will be another
wire fence to cross
under as you get to the
first sings of sandstone
canyon forming
(yEasternSunTp)
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
After crossing
under the wire fence (yEasternSunTp)
continue northwest down
the now sandstone
canyon.
A little over 500 feet
down canyon is a
downclimb
(wEastrnSunRP04) of
about 12 feet that is
moderately difficult but
has a lot of features to
use for hands and feet.
Just after the 12 foot
downclimb is another
short downclimb of about
5 feet. Down
canyon of these
downclimbs the canyon
becomes deeper and more
narrow with some twisted
walls for a short
distance before giving
way to open wash again.
About 300 feet down the
wash is a side drainage
(wEastrnSunRP05) joining
in from LDC (south).
About 450 feet down
canyon is rap 1.
Rap 1 (dEastrnSunR1-2)
is anchored RDC by a
pinch point between a
boulder and the canyon
floor and drops down
vertical a fluted wall
about 170 feet.
Rap 2 is about 40 feet
down canyon of rap 1,
drops about 35 feet and
is anchored form a log
that could wash away.
If the log washed away
you may need to get
creative for an anchor.
Rap 3 (dEastrnSunR3-5)
is about 40 feet down
canyon of rap 2.
Rap 3 is anchored LDC
from a white rock
protruding from the
ground and drops about
40 feet free hanging
over some boulders.
On the way down you can
touch both sides with
your feet but you will
be free hanging.
Rap 4 is about 40 feet
down canyon of rap 3.
Rap 4 can be anchored
from your choice of rock
or log debris at the top
of the drop.
Flooding may change this
so you may need to get
creative. Rap 4
drops 25 to 30 feet over
a series of ledges.
The first 8 feet of rap
4 is the portion you
will need rope for.
The lower portions of
rap 4 can be downclimbed
but are easier using the
rope set for that first
8 feet.
Rap 5 is about 60 feet
down canyon of rap 4 and
is anchored by a log and
drops about 20 feet.
The log anchor may be
washed away with
flooding. Optionally a
large boulder embedded
at the top of the drop
can be used as the
anchor.
About 200 feet farther
down canyon is a
downclimb
(wEastrnSunRP06) of
about 20 feet to snake
your way down a
corkscrew like feature.
Shortly after this drop
the slot opens to a
wider canyon / wash with
vegetation.
A little over 100 feet
down canyon is a
downclimb of about 8
feet over some boulders.
Just after this short
downclimb is a drop of
about 20 feet which is
rap 6.
Rap 6 (dEastrnSunR6)
drops about 20 feet and
can be downclimbed but
is moderately difficult.
If you have a good downclimber in your
group they can provide a
meat anchor for everyone
then downclimb last.
If you wish to rappel
this drop it can be
anchored from the tree
at the top of the 8 foot
downclimb just before
this drop.
Rap 7 (dEastrnSunR7) is
about 200 feet down
canyon of rap 6.
Rap 7 is anchored from a
cairn anchor and drops
about 40 feet. The
cairn anchor could wash
away so you may need to
get creative if the
anchor is washed out.
There is a short slot
section starting at the
bottom of rap 7 then the
canyon opens up wider
with trees and easy
walking with a couple of
easy downclimbs of 10
feet and 5 feet. A
little over 100 feet
down canyon of rap 7 the
canyon makes a left turn
where there is another
downclimb of about 15
feet that is an easy
slide down a crack /
slot.
A little over 100 feet
down canyon of the left
turn is rap 8.
Rap 8 (dEastrnSunR8) is
a little over 100 feet
down canyon of the left
turn. Rap 8 is
anchored from a cairn
anchor and drops about
10 feet over boulders.
Rap 8 can be downclimbed
fairly easy if you face
RDC.
Just after rap 8 is a
sloped chute to slide
about 15 feet down.
At the bottom of the
sloped chute is a log
protruding from the wash
and is the anchor for
rap 9.
Rap 9 (dEastrnSunR9)
about 80 feet down
canyon of rap 8 and is
anchored from a log
protruding from the wash
about 15 feet back and
drops over two stages
traveling about 65 feet.
With the anchor set back
you will need about 80
feet of rope travel for
rap 9.
About 200 feet down
canyon of rap 9 is a
sloped chute
(wEastrnSunRP07) to
downclimb through.
After the chute it is
easy walking and
occasional scramble over
some logs for about 500
feet to the end of
Eastern Sun Canyon (yEasternSunBt)
where it dumps into the
Virgin River Narrows.
The Exit:
From the
bottom of Eastern Sun
Canyon (yEasternSunBt)
turn right and walk east
UP the Virgin River
Narrows. From here
it is 6.1 miles up to
the upper trailhead for
the Virgin River Narrows
where the escape vehicle
is parked (tNarrowsTop).
Note:
1.6 miles up the virgin
river from the bottom of
Eastern Sun is a canyon
on the right (south)
side of the Virgin River
which is the bottom of
Deadeye Dick Canyon (yDeadeyeDickBt).
0.4 miles up the virgin
river above Deadeye Dick
is a canyon on the left
(north) side of the
Virgin River which is
the bottom of Mighty
Mouse Canyon (yMightyMouseBt).
When you pass Bulloch's
Cabin (sBullochsCabin)
you are about 2.4 miles
from the parking at the
upper trailhead.
