40 foot rope for in canyon assistance or pack toss for one possible
pothole. 50 foot rope to set an exit rope up out of the lake
if needed. We needed no ropes on our visit but conditions do
change and it is recommended to have these two ropes on hand. Wet
suits recommended as you will swim about 700 feet two times in Lake
Powell. Check the lake water temperature and level in the Lake
Powel water data base prior to your trip.
Slip N Slide Canyon route descends both forks of a small canyon where all drops can be downclimbed and end in the lake where you then swim about 700 feet in Lake Powel to where you can scramble up out of the lake, IF the lake water level is high enough. Always check the exit first! After completing one fork and the lake swim, you can hike around to descend the other fork and swim again to exit.
ALWAYS walk over and check the exit point up from the lake BEFORE you descend either of the forks. Be sure you can indeed get out or set a rope to assist if needed. If there are any doubts, set a rope to assist in exiting. A short rope will work but you will need to farm rocks to build a cairn anchor to set the rope. ALWAYS check your exit first. You have been warned. If the lake level is below 3612 feet this exit may not be possible. On our visit with Lake Powell at a level of 3612.53 feet (2019-11-09) we were able to get out with no rope but it was a definite challenge as the rock was Very slick and a bit difficult to get up the gently sloped walls.
Warning:
The exit up from
the lake after Slip-N-Slide Canyons is lake level dependent. At lake level
3612 feet we were able to exit with significant effort. Lower lake
levels may prevent exit from the water. Always go check the exit
before descending Slip or Slide canyons. Check here for
Lake Powell
Water Data. The
highest the lake has been was 3708.34 feet on 07-14-83.
Late summer or fall is best for this route as the surface temperature of the lake water is warmer (was 60 degrees on 2019-11-09 according to the Lake Powell Water Database).
While bantering for the day about what to call the place Chris D. called out Slip and Slidenide which later got morphed to Slip N Slide via more banter. No one seems to recall who first called it Slip N Slide but the name stuck. The south fork is Slip while the north fork is Slide.
Both forks were descended with no need for rope since there was log debris in the only pothole on the route. If the log debris were to flush out, the pothole will likely be a partner assist to get out of. In the event the pot hole scours deeper, a pack toss into a narrow crack on the other side could be used with a short rope attached. A 40-foot rope is recommended to have along in canyon in case anyone needs help or the pothole scours out and loses the helpful log debris. A second rope of about 50 feet is good to have on hand in case the exit from the lake requires a rope to be set for assistance exiting up out of the lake.
GPS or good navigation and map reading skills are recommended as the route involves about 1 mile of walking across open desert. Aiming in the right direction is important to avoid needless wandering.
The route can be mixed up in a variety of ways. The following is what worked well for us. From the parking spot, walk cross country to a weakness allowing an easy scramble down into the top of Slide Canyon. Descend the first 1000 feet of Slide Canyon to where you can easily scramble out the LDC (southeast) side. Exit Slide Canyon and walk to the lake exit and evaluate your ability to scramble up very slick rock out of the water (set a rope if needed). Return to Slide Canyon and continue down canyon about 250 feet to a large rock outcropping where you can exit on the RDC (west) side. Just before exiting Slide Canyon at the rock outcropping leave anything you do not want going in the lake with you. Route find about 1000 feet west over to the mid-section of Slip Canyon by a large sand bank. Descend Slip Canyon to a large landing where the group can put on wetsuits (If the lake is higher than 3612 feet, the landing may not be there). Drop into the lake and swim to the lake exit. After exiting the lake, route find back to Slide Canyon by the rock outcropping. Descend the remainder of Slide Canyon to the lake. Swim to the exit point and again route find back over and into Slide Canyon. Take off wetsuits, collect any gear you left then exit up out of Slide Canyon by the rock outcropping. Route find over to then along the upper portion of Slip Canyon (the upper section of Slip can be up-climbed if desired but rim walking is easier). Follow up Slip Canyon and up dirt slopes to the mesa above then route find open desert back to the parked vehicle(s).
Note:
Since this route winds in and
out of both forks of this canyon, a written / verbal description can get
confusing. It is a good idea to refer to the map while reading this
particular route description to help with clarity. The waypoints
listed at the bottom will also have repeated information since they are
listed in the order you get to them on the route.
To get to the Trailhead
Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea
to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map
as you drive.
From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to
the junction of highways 95 and 276.
From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then
turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers
25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).
About 1.5 miles down the dirt road is a junction (TicabooDP-01)
to a side road on the right going south. Turn right at
this junction and drive south on a dirt road.
About 1 miles down the road will be a side road (TicabooDP-50)
that leaves the main road on the left (east) then loops back to
rejoin the main road about 350 feet farther. Continue
south on the main road.
About 1.2 miles farther is a side road (TicabooDP-51) that joins
in from the left (east). Continue south.
About 2.4 farther the road turns sharp left (TicabooDP-52) and
goes from traveling south to now traveling southeast then east.
About 1.2 miles farther will be a side road (TicabooDP-53)
joining from the right (south). This is just before
reaching Danish Knoll. Continue east toward Danish Knoll
to get to the Smith Fork area.
About 0.5 miles farther is a fork in the road (TicabooDP-54).
To get to the lower section of Smith Fork veer right and continue
south east.
Note:
If you were going for canyons in the upper portion of Smith Fork
you would veer left at this fork and travel east.
About 0.8 miles farther is a fork in the road (TicabooDP-55). On
the way into the lower portion Smith Fork staying right is said
to be a smoother drive. Either fork can be taken as they
rejoin about half a mile ahead.
About 0.5 miles farther is where the forked roads rejoin
(TicabooDP-56). Continue past this junction.
About 0.6 miles farther is another fork (TicabooDP-57).
Either fork can be taken since the road rejoins about 0.2 miles
farther (TicabooDP-58)
About 0.2 miles the road drops down to cross a low point (pkSmithForkLwr).
There is a wide shallow wash crossing the road here running down
to the north east. Park here where there is plenty of
level space to park off to the side of the road.
About 0.2 miles farther is a low point in the road with a wide
shallow wash (pkSmithForkLwr) crossing the road. Continue
driving south to go to Grease Monkey or Heckle and Jeckle
Canyons.
Note:
You would park here to start Pothoez, Psycho D,
Downward Spiral, Friends With Bennies and other canyons.
About 1 mile farther is a road junction on the right (west) at
the apex of a sharp left hand bend (almost u-turn) in the road. Continue around
the left hand bend and continue east along the main road.
Note:
The exit to the right (west) is a road
to a large watering pond about 0.25 miles away.
About 0.5 miles farther the road makes a right bend to travel
south again.
About 0.4 miles farther is where you would park to start the Grease
Monkey route (pkGMonkey). There is a shallow drainage
crossing the road but no major landmarks to use for navigation.
As a navigation aid for the drive in, this spot is about 380
feet before reaching a sharp right hand bend in the road.
If you you go too far and get to the bend you can also park
there and to start.
Note:
This is also where you would set the
exit vehicle for Friends with Bennies Canyon as it uses the same
exit as Grease Monkey Canyon
To continue to Heckle and Jeckle Canyons continue to the sharp
left bend in the road then another 0.25 miles to a sharp (almost
u-turn) left hand bend in the road.
About 0.7 miles after the sharp left bend is a junction
(TicabooDP-62). Stay to the left (east) on the main road.
Note:
To the right (southeast) is a faint
road that is less traveled but joins back with the main road
about 400 feet to the south.
About 500 feet farther is a sharp right hand bend in the road
(TicabooDP-64) out on a point. Continue south along the road.
About 200 feet farther is where the other end of the faint road
joins back into main road (TicabooDP-66). Continue south along
the road.
About 0.45 miles farther the the road begins to veer more to the
west (TicabooDP-67) and pull farther away from the rim of Smith
Fork crossing over shallow drainages to the west. As the
road continues west it is still in good shape but becomes a
little less traveled.
About 0.7 miles farther is the parking spot for Slip-N-Slide
Canyons and Heckle and
Jeckle Canyons (pkHeckleJeckle) which is a parking turnout on
the left (south) side of the road. The road is smooth and in
pretty good shape but not well travelled. Park here to go to
Heckle and Jeckle Canyons.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
No exit vehicle is needed. This is done as a loop route.

The Approach to
the top of Slide Canyon:
From the parking spot (pkHeckleJeckle)
walk south for about 1
mile to the top of Slide
Canyon aiming slightly
east of south as you
walk.
At the weakness
(SlipNSlide01) to
scramble down into the
top of Slide Canyon then
walk about 600 feet
southwest down canyon to
a short bypassable slot.
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
About 600 feet
down canyon is the start
of (ySlideTp) a section
of easy galumphing for
about 100 feet or walk
around.
About 200 feet down
canyon is another
section of easy
galumphing
(SlipNSlide02) for about
120 feet or walk around.
About 200 feet farther
is the start of
(SlipNSlide03) a mix of
galumphing and walking.
About 600 feet down
canyon the LDC side wall
is low angle
(SlipNSlide04EE)
allowing easy scramble
in or out of Slide
Canyon. Before
continuing down canyon,
be sure to go evaluate
the lake exit.
To exit Slide
Canyon and go evaluate
the exit from the lake,
scramble up low angle
slope out of Slide
Canyon on the LDC
(southeast) side and
walk sloped slickrock
contouring southeast.
After checking the lake
exit return to here to
begin descent of the
canyon.
About 500 feet after
leaving Slide Canyon is
a wide saddle like area
on the crest of a
slickrock ridge
(SlipNSlide05).
To
get down to the lake
exit, continue down to
the southeast.
About 550 feet farther
the route passes by the
head of (SlipNSlide06) a
short pothole drainage.
Walk around the head of
this drainage then walk
south down sloped
slickrock about 500 feet
to the waters edge
(assuming lake level of
3612 feet). Once
at the waters edge,
(SlipNSlide07LE)
evaluate your ability to
get out of the lake
here. If there are any
doubts, set a rope up to
assist in exiting. A
short rope will work but
you will need to farm
rocks in the area to
build a cairn anchor to
set the rope. If the
lake level is below 3612
feet this exit may not
be possible. The walls
are low angle but super
slick and can be very
difficult to exit.
After you are sure you
can exit the lake,
reverse your route and
drop back into Slide
Canyon.
Once back in
Slide Canyon
after evaluating your
exit from the lake
(SlipNSlide04EE),
continue walking and
galumphing down canyon.
A little over 200 feet
farther is a large
outcropping on the RDC
(west) side where you
can scramble in or out
of the canyon on the RDC
(west) side.
To exit Slide
Canyon and go to Slip
Canyon,
scramble out of the
canyon on the up-canyon
side of the large rock
outcropping
(SlipNSlide08EE) on the
RDC (west) side. Then
route find west about
1000 feet into the mid
section of Slip Canyon.
To enter the mid
section of Slip Canyon,
walk into the lower
portion of Slip Canyon
by a large sand bank
(SlipNSlide09EE).
Continue down canyon
with easy bridging as
the slot narrows and
quickly deepens.
About 175 feet down
canyon is the start of
(SlipNSlide10) a
downclimbing section
about 250 feet long with
3 easy stem style
downclimbs of about 20,
30 then 15 feet followed
by easy galumphing out
to a wide landing just
before the two forks
join (assumes lake level
of 3612 feet).
Once at the landing,
Change into your
wetsuits then drop into
the lake where the two
forks join (ySlipNSlideBt)
and swim to the exit
point.
To exiting from
the confluence of the
two forks, drop
into the lake (ySlipNSlideBt)
and swim about 700 feet
to the exit point
passing a short pothole
fork along the swim. The
first 300 feet of the
swim is in narrow slot
where you can use the
walls to push yourself
along before getting to
wide open channel.
When you get to the spot
for exiting the lake
(SlipNSlide07LE)
scramble up out of the
water then route find
north about 500 feet to
the top of a short
pothole drainage.
Note that this scramble
out is made very
difficult by slick slimy
rock.
Cross over the head of
the pothole drainage
(SlipNSlide06) then
continue northwest about
500 feet up moderately
steep slickrock to a
very wide saddle like
area (SlipNSlide05).
then continue northwest
about 500 feet to where
you can scramble into
the mid section of Slide
Canyon.
Once back in
Slide Canyon again
(SlipNSlide04EE), walk
and galumph down canyon
about 200 feet to the
large outcropping on the
RDC (west) side where
you can scramble in or
out of the canyon on the
RDC (west) side.
Continue down canyon
past the rock
outcropping then walk
and galumph down canyon
for about 300 feet to an
elevator style down
climb.
The elevator downclimb
(SlipNSlide11) is about
25 feet with smooth
walls allowing a fast
smooth ride down for
those who like elevator
downclimbs.
About 100 feet farther
is a pothole
(SlipNSlide12PH) with
log debris to assist in
crossing. If log debris
scours out this pothole
may need a partner
assist to get out of and
into the narrow slot on
the down canyon side. If
the pothole scours out
deeper, a pack can be
tossed into the narrow
crack down canyon to
assist getting out.
About 80 feet farther is
a debris pile of small
sticks (SlipNSlide13)
that we had to galumph
over where all the
sticks were sticking up
reminding us of a Punji
Pit. As you round
the corner down canyon,
the slot begins to fill
with water as you
descend to lake level
(assumes the lake is at
level 3612ft). Stem down
into the water and begin
the swing to the lake
exit.
The Exit:
Once
again, swim about 700
feet in the lake to the
lake exit point again
(SlipNSlide07LE).
Scramble up out of the
lake then route find
north about 500 feet to
the top of a short
pothole drainage
(SlipNSlide06).
Go around the head of
the pothole drainage and
continue northwest about
500 feet up moderately
steep slickrock to a
very wide saddle like
area.
From the saddle like
area (SlipNSlide05)
continue northwest about
500 feet to where you
can scramble into the
mid section of Slide
Canyon.
Once back in Slide
Canyon (SlipNSlide04EE)
walk and galumph down
canyon about 200 feet to
the large rock
outcropping on the RDC
side.
From the large rock
outcropping
(SlipNSlide08EE)
scramble out of the
canyon on the up-canyon
side of the large rock
outcropping on the RDC
(west) side. Then route
find west toward the
wide open portions of
Slip Canyon.
Turn left and walk north
up Slip Canyon. A
few hundred feet up
canyon is the bottom of
a 300 foot long narrow
section (SlipNSlide14).
This slot can optionally
be traveled up but will
involve a 30 foot stem
upclimb in a sloped
slot. Or you can
easily walk around on
the right (east) side to
the top (SlipNSlide15)
of this narrow section.
About 100 feet up canyon
the top of the slickrock
drainage ends (ySlipTp)
just before you get to
the base of dirt slopes.
Route find your way
north about 700 feet up
the dirt slopes to
rolling desert
(SlipNSlide16).
Routefind north a little
over 1 mile back to the
parking spot (pkHeckleJeckle).
The vehicles will not be
in view for a while and
good map reading or GPS
skills will help keep
you on track.

If examining the exit prior to descending Slipe or Slide Canyons, evaluate your ability to get out of the lake here. If there are any doubts, set a rope up to assist in exiting. A short rope will work but you will need to farm rocks in the area to build a cairn anchor to set the rope. If the lake level is below 3612 feet this exit may not be possible. The walls are low angle but super slick and can be very difficult to exit.
If exiting from the lake after descending Slip or Slide Canyons, scramble up out of the lake then route find north about 500 feet to the top of a short pothole drainage.
