Second Guess is a canyon I wanted to look at just because
it was there, not because it looked good. Turns out its not all that great but
can make for a lazy day out to see an new area. Not recommended as a destination
canyon. Actually its not really recommended at all. Just something to do if
bored.
Second Guess Fork drops into Sevenmile Canyon
Downstream of Little East Fork and up stream of Big East Fork. The exit for
the canyon described here is to go down Sevenmile Canyon to the junction of
Big East Fork, then go up Big East fork, then scramble up the rubble filled
exit up from Big East Fork then follow the remainder of the Big East Fork
exit route.
A GPS or decent map reading is needed to be sure you do
not drop into the wrong fork.
Other exits are possible. One of which looks like a
good route but has not been confirmed is to get to Sevenmile Canyon then
turn and go up stream for almost 500 feet to where you can scramble up some
sloped ledges up to the rim above then rim walk Second Guess Canyon to it's
head then reverse the approach route.
Second Guess Fork was named because we were on a
weekend planned for easy routes mixing and matching some of the Sevenmile
drainages over two days. When we got to the rim on day 1 and discovered we
did not bring extra webbing, sandtrap, potshot, or other tools for the
unknown. While we did not expect much from the canyon, it is not smart to
explore with almost no tools for "just in case". So, we found our selves on
the rim, second guessing our poor planning. We decided to descend the part
we could easily see on day 1, then come back on day 2 to do the part we
could not see well.
The pictures in the gallery will appear very out of
order and they kind of are. We did various portions of the route on
different days and combines with other routes in the area. The pictures used
are a combination of what was taken during the two days and lumped into one
gallery.
To get to the Trailhead
Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea
to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map
as you drive.
From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to
the junction of highways 95 and 276.
From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then
turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers
25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).
About 1.5 miles from the highway is a junction (TicabooDP-01)
of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13410 branches off to the
south. Continue east on BLM road 13400. Note: If you were headed
to the Smith Fork area you would turn south onto BLM road 13410.
About 2 miles farther is another junction
(TicabooDP-02) of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13420
branches off to the south. Continue east on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13420 to the south goes out to Cane Spring Well
about 1.25 miles south.
About 0.2 miles farther is short side road (TicabooDP-03) on the
left (north) that goes to a camp area.
Stay right to
continue on BLM road 13400. Beyond this point the roads
will have intermittent rough sections.
About 0.37
miles past here is a fork in the road where the two roads rejoin
a short distance later. The low road is typically the
smoothest.
About 1.7 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-04) of
BLM roads (13400 continues north-ish and 13430 branches off to
the south).
Continue north on BLM road 13400.
Note: If you were going to the roads between Warm Springs Creek
and Sevenmile Creek, you would turn south onto BLM road 13430.
About 0.3 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-05) of
BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13440 branches off to
the north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13440 to the south goes out to Colt Spring Well
about 0.4 miles north.
About 0.5 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-06) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13450 branches off to the
north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 0.9 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-07) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13430 branches off to the
south).
Turn south onto BLM road 13430.
Note: If you were
going to Tough, SF Ticaboo or Sleepytime Trio Canyons you would
continue northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 700 feet farther is a fork in the road (extWarmSpring).
At this fork stay left to continue toward the East Branch of
Seven Mile Creek.
About 0.4 miles farther is another fork in the road
(ext7MileCkEB). Veer right (more south) to continue toward
the East Branch of 7 Mile Creek.
About 1.0 mile farther is a junction (7MileCkEBDP-01) where a
side road joins in from the left. Continue straight
(south) past the side road.
About 0.5 miles farther is a jog in the road (7MileCkEBDP-02)
near an old stock pond. Turning left leads to a berm with
a survey marker by a stock pond. Veer right to continue south.
As you drive south from the stock pond, the road crosses over
some shallow washes. Park off to the side of the road by
the wash that is 0.52 miles past the stock pond (pk7MileEast-1).
There is no obvious spot to park, just park off to the side of
the road to allow traffic to pass while you are gone.
Alternately you can park at the other parking spot about 600
feet north of here where another minor drainage crosses the road
and is another minor fork of Big East Fork.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
No exit vehicle is needed. This is done as a loop route.
GPS coordinate information listed at the bottom. For information about waypoint naming and map symbols, refer to the
Glossary page.

Map of the technical section.
The Approach:
From car park
(pk7MileEast-1) walk
southwest across rolling
desert staying just to
the north of the minor
drainage (the minor
drainage will be on your
left). Walk about 0.73
miles out to a minor
dirt hill near the head
of Selfish Fork.
From the minor dirt hill
(7mileBEF_19) walk
northwest over into then
across to the other side
of the shallow drainage
above Selfish Fork.
As you cross over the
minor drainage
(7mileBEF_18) walk west
roughly rim walking the
dirt mesa above Selfish
Fork on the left
(south). As you get
about 0.2 miles farther
veer left and look for a
weakness in the cliff
band to the right
(north).
From the top (Second01)
of a rubble pile
weakness in the cliff
band, Scramble down to
the next lower level
then walk west about 500
feet to the head of
Second Guess Canyon (ySecondTp).
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From the top of
Second Guess Canyon (ySecondTp)
scramble and downclimb
through sloped and
featured slickrock down
to the start of a
section of stemming /
galumphing where you
will be 10 or 12 feet
off the deck for about
200 feet down canyon.
Shortly down canyon is
rap 1.
Rap 1 (dSecondR1) is
anchored from one of
many bushes about 40
feet up canyon and drops
about 45. Be careful
about which one you
choose..... pick a live
one. At the bottom of
rap 1 is a deep narrow
slot to walk and galumph
through for about 300
feet.
As the canyon opens up
to wide wash walking
(Second02) it is about
200 feet to a ravine
(SecondEE1a) that can be
scrambled up on the LDC
(south) side if an early
exit is desired.
A little over 300 feet
farther are loped ledges
(Second03) to scramble
down. A partner assist
at the bottom may be
useful for some to keep
from sliding too fast.
About 150 feet farther
is rap 2.
Rap 2 (dSecondR2) is
anchored from one of
many large rocks about
20 feet back in the wash
and drops over two
stages using about 90
feet of rope. Be sure to
choose a rock that is
solid and does not move.
Note:
you can also scramble up
out the RDC (northish)
side from the top of rap
2 if
needed.
Just after rap 2 is a
steep section of
slickrock (Second04) to
downclimb where only the
last 6 feet are so steep
you wonder if you will
break free to a slide.
Right at the bottom of
that is a deep rubble
filled crack to
downclimb into but is a
little awkward /
challenging due to lots
of loose rock. Paying
attention and moving
slowly should be enough
to allow most people to
easily downclimb this
spot. The deep crack
opens up a very short
distance after getting
to the ground with more
open wash walking.
Wide wash walking for
about 900 feet gets you
to the end of Second
Guess Fork where it
meets Sevenmile Canyon
(ySecondBt).
The Exit:
From the
bottom of Second Guess
Fork (ySecondBt) turn
left and start south
down Sevenmile Canyon.
About 900 feet down
canyon is an early exit
(j7MilEx1RP-01) out the
RDC (west) side of Seven
mile.
Note:
This exit is not used
for Second Guess Fork as
it is on the wrong side
of Sevenmile.
About 225 feet farther
down canyon is rap 4 in
Sevenmile Canyon.
Rap 4 of Sevenmile
(d7MileR4) can be
anchored from rocks at
the top of the drop and
drops down the LDC side
of a huge boulder a
total of about 20 feet
over 2 stages around and
under a the boulder.
Skilled downclimbers can
downclimb this drop with
partner assist and a
short rope. The first
person down can use a
handline provided by
someone at the top. The
first person down can
then stay at the bottom
of the first stage to
partner assist others
through the first stage
then follow down the
second stage which is
easy.
About 600 feet farther
is a short section of
boulder debris
(7MileMn15) to walk /
boulder hop through.
About 850 feet farther
is the confluence with
Big East Fork
(y7MileBEF-Bt).
Turn left and start east
up Big East Fork.
About 800 feet up Big
East Fork will be a big
boulder pile that will
be moderately
challenging to upclimb.
Just at the top of the
boulder pile is a rubble
filled ravine on the
left (north) side of the
canyon running right up
next to the Selfish Fork
which drops into Big
East Fork here.
From the bottom of the
rubble filled ravine
(j7mileBEF-Ext) scramble up
the rubble. After about 200
feet the grade becomes
more gentle and will be
less rubble filled.
About 200 feet farther
you will be able to turn
right and scramble up
out of the cross joint
you are in up onto
rolling slick rock.
When the cross joint is
shallow enough
(7mileBEF_10) to allow
you to scramble to the
right (northeast) up
onto rolling slickrock.
About 140 feet farther
is the top of a ridge
(7mileBEF_11) you can
walk down to get into
the wide open wash of
the Selfish Fork below.
To continue on the exit
route continue northeast
along rolling slickrock
roughly following what
feels like the crest of
the ridge.
About 650 feet farther
the route tops out
briefly (7mileBEF_12).
Continue northeast down
the other side and over
to a prominent steep
hill about 450 feet
away.
When you get to the hill
(7mileBEF_13) go part
way up the steep hill to
here then veer left
(north) to work your way
out around the steep
upper portion. Walk
about 200 feet to the
left the circle around
200 feet again to get to
the other side of the
hill where you will see
one more hill that you
can walk straight up.
On the other side is a
survey marker
(7Mile-BM-01), continue
northeast up the hill.
At the top out of a hill
(7mileBEF_14) you now
have a good view of the
cliff side of the mesa
about 700 feet away.
Walk over to the cliff
band and travel just to
the right of it.
When you get to the base
of the cliff band
(7mileBEF_15) below the
mesa top. Walk along the
base of the cliff band
to the right (southeast)
for about 270 feet to
the base of a rubble
pile to scramble up to
the mesa top.
From the bottom of a
rubble pile
(7mileBEF_16) scramble
up to get up on the mesa
top.
From the top of the
rubble pile
(7mileBEF_17) continue
northeast back toward
the road.
About 0.34 miles farther
cross over the shallow
drainage (7mileBEF_18)
then continue northeast
and up the dirt hill to
the next level.
This
shallow drainage is the
top end of the Selfish
Fork.
after getting up the
small dirt hill
(7mileBEF_19) continue
northeast toward the
road. As you continue
you may notice a
drainage forming on your
right (southish) which
is the top of Big East
Fork. You can drop back
into the drainage if
desired and follow it up
but travel may be easier
staying high and walking
the rolling desert to
the car (pk7MileEast-1)
about 0.75 miles to the
northeast.

Side canyon joins in from RDC (we called it the Selfish Fork) and there is a ravine / rubble ramp just down canyon of it. To exit the canyon scramble north up the ravine / rubble ramp.
If you want to see the remainder of the Big East Fork continue down canyon over one 10 foot drop over a boulder then a mix of walking and light galumphing for about 900 feet to the confluence with Seven Mile Creek. After going to the confluence come back up canyon to here to exit. Caution if you go to the confluence it is easy to walk past it and never notice and find your self walking down main Seven Mile Creek.
To Exit:
Scramble up the side ravine / rubble ramp. After about 200 feet the grade becomes more gentle and will be less rubble filled. About 200 feet farther you will be able to turn right and scramble up out of the cross joint you are in up onto rolling slick rock.
Note:
The last 150 feet of the Selfish Fork just above here is downclimbable down to here. For a fun side trip you can go part way up the exit route then drop into the Selfish Fork where it is a wide open wash then down climb through this section back down into the Big East Fork. This side trip adds a little extra fun to the Big East Fork if desired.

Crossing over the shallow drainage. Continue northeast and up the dirt hill to the next level.
This shallow drainage is the top end of the Selfish Fork.
If on approach to Second Guess Fork walk west roughly rim walking the dirt mesa above Selfish Fork on the left (south). As you get about 0.2 miles farther veer left and look for a weakness in the cliff band to the right (north).

After getting up this small dirt hill continue northeast toward the road. As you continue you may notice a drainage forming on your right (southish) which is the top of Big East Fork. You can drop back into the drainage if desired and follow it up but travel may be easier staying high and walking the rolling desert to the car about 0.75 miles to the northeast.
If on the approach route to Selfish Fork continue about 500 feet southwest to the top of a the Selfish Fork drainage then about 200 feet farther to the first drop at the head of the canyon.
If on approach to Second Guess Fork walk northwest over into then across to the other side of the shallow drainage above Selfish Fork.

Spots to park for doing the Big East Fork, Selfish Fork, Little East Fork or Second Guess Fork of Seven Mile Creek. This spot is 0.52 miles after passing the stock pond and is where a minor drainage crosses the road. There is no defined parking spot and you will need to pull off the side of the road where you feel comfortable doing so. A GPS may be helpful to know you are in the correct spot.
To go down Big East Fork,
follow southwest down the minor drainage here or park about 600 feet north of here where another minor drainage crosses the road and is another minor fork of Big East Fork which can also be walked down to enter Big East Fork. Walk southwest down the minor drainage you parked at for about 0.42 miles to the confluence of the two minor drainages.
To go to Selfish Fork or Second Guess Fork.
Walk southwest across rolling desert staying just to the north of the minor drainage (the minor drainage will be on your left). Walk about 0.73 miles out to a minor dirt hill near the head of Selfish Fork.
To go to Little East Fork,
