Canyoneering Route Description
Psychological Damage Canyon - 4A III X
Aka Psycho D
Ticaboo Mesa, Utah.
04-21-12, 3 people, 1 Day (Travel time in route 7 hours)
Time Required - 6 to 8 hours
Distance - 4.4 miles Total, 0.8 miles Technical
Rappels - 0 Rappels, Longest Rappel N/A feet.
This canyon is still technically difficult even though it has no
rappels.
Elevation Range - 4130 - 3740 Feet
Shuttle Required - No Vehicle - High Clearance
(4WD if roads are bad)
Permit Required - No
No ropes or specific gear is needed. However this canyon is
still challenging and should only be attempted by experienced
canyoneers. There are sections of high stemming and silo
crossing at up to 50 feet off the deck. One of the pot holes
in the upper section may also require a partner assist to cross or
get out of. The only water of concern would be two pools at
the end of the canyon and are short swims. In general a wet
suit is not needed for this canyon since the swims are short and
getting out and drying off will do the trick.
WARNING!!
This is an X Canyon:
There are potentially
deadly situations with no way to add protection. When that
happens, friends or gear are of no use... You truly are "on your own"
(with an audience). Do not attempt an X
canyon until you are proficient with sustained high stemming and
confident with your technical abilities including
advanced anchors, ascending, pot hole escape and
partner assists. Information about X canyons is of little use if
you lack skills or experience. Making a mistake at the wrong time can kill.
Drop into an X canyon.... "At Your Own Risk". Ultimately you are responsible for your own actions.
Sometimes a rim crew is a
good idea when working through an X canyon. Where terrain allows
it is a good safety net to have someone up top with a long rope they can
lower to help get you out if something bad happens. And if they
can not get you out at least you have someone up top right there with
you who can head out to go get help or just come back with more gear.
If there are any doubts about your ability to handle the X canyon
consider recruiting some people you trust as a rim team. If you
are new and just starting out in some X canyons, a rim team (where
possible) is great moral support too!
WARNING!!
No ropes or gear
are needed to complete the Psycho D
route which would make this a technical
rating of 2 using the ACA Canyon Rating
system. Psycho D is one of the
canyons where it becomes evident that
the Canyon Rating System has some flaws
and does not cover all situations.
I am rating Psycho D a 4 in an attempt
to help convey the challenge of the
route.
There is only one
spot in Psycho D that gives it the X
rating which is the crux silo just
before reaching the end. For the
crux silo you will cross over it about
50 feet off the deck and a fall would
likely be fatal. The rest of the
canyon is relatively safe other than one
other silo in the lower section where
you cross about 25 feet off the deck.
Keep in mind that assisting each other
is difficult or not possible when
crossing these silos. You are on
your own with no protection which is
what makes this an X. Do not go
into an X canyon thinking that a skilled
partner will get you through, you need
to have the skills and the mind set to
make it on your own.
Kelsey describes
only the lower portion of Psycho D in
his book and notes there are potholes up
canyon of the lower section. The
upper section has some fun in it and is
worth including in your trip through
Psycho D. My nick name for the
upper portion of Psycho D is Mrs. Bates.
Note - Lake Level
The level of Lake Powell can effect how far down Smith Fork you
can get on dry land.
Knowing the water level of Lake Powell can be helpful when determining
how far down Smith Fork you can go.
Check here for
Lake Powell
Water Data.
To give a starting point of reference in Smith
Fork, we were able to get down to near the bottom of Downward Spiral
(which is one drainage south (about 0.45 miles of Psycho D) on 01-28-12
when the level of Lake Powel was at an elevation of 3637.11 feet.
Getting into the bottom of Downward Spiral from Smith Fork would have
involved about 50 feet of swimming from a bank we we were on over into
the bottom of Downward Spiral. The highest the lake has been was
3708.34 feet on 07-14-83. At that level the bottom of Psycho D should
still be above the lake level.
To get to the Trailhead
Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea
to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map
as you drive.
From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to
the junction of highways 95 and 276.
From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then
turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers
25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).
About 1.5 miles down the dirt road is a junction (TicabooDP-01)
to a side road on the right going south. Turn right at
this junction and drive south on a dirt road.
About 1 miles down the road will be a side road (TicabooDP-50)
that leaves the main road on the left (east) then loops back to
rejoin the main road about 350 feet farther. Continue
south on the main road.
About 1.2 miles farther is a side road (TicabooDP-51) that joins
in from the left (east). Continue south.
About 2.4 farther the road turns sharp left (TicabooDP-52) and
goes from traveling south to now traveling southeast then east.
About 1.2 miles farther will be a side road (TicabooDP-53)
joining from the right (south). This is just before
reaching Danish Knoll. Continue east toward Danish Knoll
to get to the Smith Fork area.
About 0.5 miles farther is a fork in the road (TicabooDP-54).
To get to the lower section of Smith Fork veer right and continue
south east.
Note:
If you were going for canyons in the upper portion of Smith Fork
you would veer left at this fork and travel east.
About 0.8 miles farther is a fork in the road (TicabooDP-55). On
the way into the lower portion Smith Fork staying right is said
to be a smoother drive. Either fork can be taken as they
rejoin about half a mile ahead.
About 0.5 miles farther is where the forked roads rejoin
(TicabooDP-56). Continue past this junction.
About 0.6 miles farther is another fork (TicabooDP-57).
Either fork can be taken since the road rejoins about 0.2 miles
farther (TicabooDP-58)
About 0.2 miles the road drops down to cross a low point (pkSmithForkLwr).
There is a wide shallow wash crossing the road here running down
to the north east. Park here where there is plenty of
level space to park off to the side of the road.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
No exit vehicle is needed. This is done as a loop route.
GPS coordinate information listed at the bottom. For information about waypoint naming and map symbols, refer to the

Overview Map of the drive into the route.
Zoomed Map 1 of the drive in.
Zoomed Map 2 of the drive in.
Map of the entire route.
The Approach:
From the parking spot (pkSmithForkLwr),
leave the dirt road and
walk north east down the
wide shallow drainage.
About 0.4 miles from the
parking spot will be a
drop in the wash of
about 40 feet
(wSmithLwrRP-01).
From the top of this
drop walk up onto the
rim to the left (north)
to get to a ridge
running north east.
About 0.25 miles north
east is the end of the
ridge you have been
following out on a point
(wSmithLwrRP-02).
While in this area take
a moment to walk over to
the north side of the
ridge for a good view
over a large bend in
Smith Fork below.
From the point route
find your way down the
ledges on the right
(south east) side of the
point. You may
find a faint path
running over to a good
place to start down.
To get down off the
point find your way down
a couple of down climbs
descending the ledges
down to the slick rock
below.
After getting down off
the point walk south
east down the slick rock
toward a pot hole filled
drainage about 450 feet
away. Cross over
the drainage
(wSmithLwrRP-03)
After crossing the pot
hole filled drainage,
route find your way down
the slick rock and into
Smith Fork near the
bottom of the drainage
(jSmithFkLwr1).
When you get down into
Smith Fork turn right
and walk south down
stream in Smith Fork.
About 0.25 miles down
Smith Fork is where the
bottom of the Psycho D
and Pothoez drainage (yPsychD-Bt)
meets Smith Fork.
Side Trip:
Before continuing
the climb up out of Smith
Fork to continue the
approach to Psycho D or
other nearby slots
you can take a moment to
go see the bottom of the
Psycho D route.
This side trip is worth
a look if you have never
been in the area.
If you plan to do the
Psycho D route you can
get an idea of how much
water is at the end of
the route.
To go up to the bottom
of both Pothoez and
Psycho D use a
short use trail on the
RUC (south) side of the
Psycho D / Pothoez
Draiange to start up
into the canyon.
About 300 feet from
Smith Fork will be a
drainage dropping in
from the left (north)
and is the bottom of
Pothoez Canyon (jPsychoPothoez).
To get to the bottom of
Psycho D continue east about 350 feet up
the long sandy wash up
to the bottom drop of
Psycho D to inspect the
water. For most if
not all of the Psycho D
route you are stemming
above the floor, but you will
have to swim this last
pool. So looking
this pool over will tell
you how much of a swim
you will have at the
end.
Ok so now back to the
junction in Smith Fork.
To exit up out of Smith
Fork and continue the
approach to Psycho D, Pothoez and other slots
in the area, look for
the point / ridge that
drops down to Smith Fork
just north of the bottom
of the Psycho D /
Pothoeze drainage.
This is the ridge that
divides Smith Fork from
the Pothoez drainage.
Route
find your way up onto
the ledge running along
the Smith Fork (west)
side of this ridge and
follow it north for
about 200 feet to find
the bottom of a slope
leading up to a rocky
saddle on the ridge.
scramble up the dirt
and rock slope up to the
saddle on the ridge
(wPsychoD-RP-01).
This saddle is about 200
feet north of the Psycho
D / Pothoez Drainage.
From the saddle / notch
on the ridge
scramble north up the
steep slick rock ridge.
The first 50 or 60 feet
of this are very steep
and you will need hands
and feet for traction.
After the first steep
part the route levels
off a bit to allow easy
travel on rolling slick
rock.
As you top out on the
slick rock, veer right
and route find your way
north east roughly
following the rim of
Pothoez which is now on
your right (south east).
About 400 feet along the
rim you will find a spot
where you can drop into Pothoez
(jPothoezPosEx1)
if you would enjoy
looking at a small
section of it.
Continue walking
northeast roughly
following Pothoez for
about 1200 feet to a wide
sandy spot in the Pothoez drainage (yPothoez-Md).
This sandy spot is where
you could drop down into
lower Pothoez if you only
wanted to do the lower
section.
To continue over to
Psycho D cross the
Pothoez drainage here
and continue up the
slick rock to the south
for about 500 feet to a
top out
(wPsychoD-RP-02).
The drainage just south
of this top out is the
lower portion of Psycho
D. From this top
out is where you choose
to go south toward
Downward Spiral or east
to continue up to the
top of Psycho D.
Note:
If you were traveling
south toward Downward
Spiral you would
continue south from this
top out and follow a
cross joint down into
Psycho D where you could
cross and exit up a
cross joint on the other
side.
To continue to the top
of Psycho D turn left
(east) and route find
your way about 1200 feet
to the head of a slot
starting from a wide
open wash (yPsychoD-Md).
This is the top of the
Lower portion of Psycho
D. Kelsey has this
labeled as the top of
Psycho D in his books
and just notes there are
potholes up canyon of
this point,. If
you are just looking to
do the lower portion you
can drop into Psycho D
here and skip down to
that portion of the tech
section below. The
upper section of Psycho
D has some fun in it and
is worth including in
your trip.
To continue to Upper
Psycho D (aka Mrs.
Bates), walk a little
over 500 feet east up
the Psycho D wash to a
confluence (jPsychoConf).
The right (south) fork
is Upper Psycho D.
From the confluence walk
about 800 feet up the
right fork to where the
canyon starts to turn
right (wPsychoD-RP-03).
From there start to
scrambling up the
rolling slick rock on
the left (north) side of
the canyon and continue
east roughly following
Upper Psycho D on the
right (south).
After about 1100 feet
find your way back down
to the canyon floor
where Upper Psycho D
begins (yPsychoD-Tp).
This is where the upper
Psycho slot begins with
wide open slickrock and
wash up canyon.
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From head of Upper
Psycho D (yPsychoD-Tp)
downclimb about 10 feet
to a pothole that can be
stepped across.
The next 600 feet
involves sections of
stemming / galumphing to
about 10 or 15 feet off
the deck and a few
potholes to cross.
Most of the potholes can
be bridged over but one
is about 6 feet deep and
will require going in
and will need a partner
assist to get out of.
About 600 feet from the
head of the canyon is a
spot where you can walk
for about 150 feet
(wPsychoD-RP-04).
The next 275 feet of
canyon involves low
stemming over sculpted
silo like walls before
reaching a point you can
walk again
(wPsychoD-RP-05).
A little over 200 feet
down canyon the walls
widen out where there
are a few potholes to
walk around
(wPsychoD-RP-06).
Some quite large and
would be difficult to
get out of if you
slipped in.
A few hundred feet down
canyon you are back at
the confluence (jPsychoConf)
marking the end of Upper
Psycho D (Mrs. Bates).
Walk down canyon about
500 feet to the top of
Lower Psycho D.
If
you are only doing the
lower portion of Psycho
D as described in
Kelsey's book this is
the drop in point (yPsychoD-Md).
The top of the Lower
Psycho D starts down
into a slot from the
wide open wash up canyon
of it. The first
1000 feet of Lower
Psycho D involves low
stemming as you work
your way over or down
through sculpted silo
like walls. Travel
is slow going as you
work your way around the
featured walls but stay
pretty low and the moves
are all easy.
About 1000 feet down
canyon from the start of
Lower Psycho D is a
cross joint that allows
escape from either side
(jPsychoPosExt).
This cross joint makes
it possible to cross
Psycho D here and is
used as part of the
approach over to
Downward Spiral.
Travel down canyon of
the cross joint is low
stemming and galumphing
for about 200 feet
before reaching a silo
of about 25 feet deep
that is not hard to
cross but will get your
attention as you look
down. Just after the
silo crossing is an
elevator of about 10
feet down to a section
where you can walk for a
ways between undulating
walls on both sides.
After the short walk the
canyon presents a little
more low stemming and
galumphing for a couple
hundred feet before
reaching a short wide
section
(wPsychoD-RP-07).
After the bivy flake the
canyon becomes tight and
narrow. Travel is
a slow going as you have
a mix of stemming,
galumphing, travel up
and down, cross silos
and have a few awkward
moves. In this
section of canyon you
are 40 to 50 feet off
the deck and in the X
zone. Most spots
you are not going to
fall since it is skinny
below you. But in
a couple spots it is
possible to fall
unobstructed to the
ground as you cross
silos.
There are two major silo
crossings down canyon of
the bivy flake area and
both will have you about
40 or 50 feet off the
deck. The first of
these silos is easy to
cross with your back on
one wall and your feet
on the other wall.
A little over 500 feet
down canyon of the bivy
flake is the second silo
and is the crux of the
route (PsychoCrxSilo).
As you get close to the
silo there is a very
skinny crack to worm
through to get to it.
You can stem up over the
skinny slot and cross
the silo high which puts
you close to 60 feet off
the deck and is a
difficult move.
Another option and the
one recommended is to
worm your way through
the crack about 12 feet
below the high crossing
zone and stem across the
silo at that level.
Crossing from the crack
will put you 40 to 50
feet off the deck.
It is best to worm
through the crack
leading to the crux silo
with your right shoulder
pointing down canyon to
make the crossing less
awkward. Large
people will have
difficulty squeezing
through the skinny crack
and may be forced high.
After crossing the crux
silo worm your way
through the next section
for about 40 or 50 feet
to an elevatorish down
climb into a large
chamber. The large
chamber has a pool that
will be a for about 20
feet if full. On
the other side of the
pool is the top of the
final down climb to
complete the technical
section. The last
downclimb is down a
crack for about 25 feet
to a pool in a wide open
subway section.
After the final down
climb walk down canyon a
couple hundred feet to a
large ledge on the right
where a side drainage
drops in which is the
bottom of the Pothoez
route (jPsychoPothoez).
Follow a use trail on
the LDC side for another
couple hundred feet back
to the end of the Psycho
D drainage where it
dumps into Smith Fork (yPsychD-Bt).
The Exit:
After
getting back to Smith
Fork (yPsychD-Bt) turn
right and walk north up
Smith Fork about 0.2
miles to a drainage on
the left (west) side.
This is the where you
dropped down into Smith
Fork on the approach.
Reverse the approach
route from here to get
back to the cars (pkSmithForkLwr)
about a mile away.

Crossing the Crux Silo can be done high by going over a skinny slot and crossing close to 60 feet off the deck. The recommended option is to worm through the skinny crack with your right shoulder facing down canyon to make the crossing less awkward. Worming thorugh the skinny slot will have you cross the silo about 40 or 50 feet off the deck.
