Canyoneering Route Description
Hard Day Harvey Canyon - 3B III R
Ticaboo Mesa, Utah.
12-31-11, 11 people, 1 Day (Travel time in route 6.5 hours)
Time Required - 5 to 8.5 hours.
Distance - 5.7 miles Total, 1.4 miles Technical
Rappels - 3 Rappels, Longest Rappel 35 feet.
Elevation Range - 4855 - 3770 Feet
Shuttle Required - No Vehicle - High Clearance
(possibly 4WD depending on road conditions)
Permit Required - No
Rappelling and anchor gear, Ropes and or pull cords for rappels up
to 35 feet and 70 feet of 1 inch webbing for sling placement. Wet
suits will be needed when the canyon is holding water. Very little sun gets to
a lot of the canyon, so it is best to plan on
water and have a wet suit handy. If you are lucky enough to
get a recent conditions report from someone, a more informed choice
can be made. See more in the
general notes section.
70 feet of webbing is suggested just incase rap 2 needs webbing
replacement. Since the anchor is set about 30 feet back from
the drop this will use a large amount of webbing in the event it
needs to be updated.
Hard Day Harvey
involves sections of stemming and
some narrow spots to squeeze
through. Large people may have
difficulty with this route and may
need to stem higher and for longer
periods than others. Keep this
in mind when considering the route.
There are two exit
options for the Good Day Jim and Hard
Day Harvey routes. The East exit
option is described here. For
information on the West exit see the
route description for Good Day Jim.
Note
/ Warning:
Route finding may be an issue on the
exit route. Good map or GPS
combined with good navigation skills
needed. The exit route is complex and
very difficult to describe verbally or
written. This exit route should
not be attempted by those who lack route
finding experience.
Hard Day Harvey may not be an R canyon but I listed it
as such due to the possible combination of hazards. A couple spots
in the canyon are narrow and can prove troublesome for some people.
One spot in particular, could have a canyoneer in a pool of water in
narrow slot then needing to stem up with slick clay mud quickly draining
their energy.
If Hard Day Harvey is dry, no wet suit is needed.
However
this canyon can hold significant water.
Most water holding areas will receive little sunlight and
be very cold. If
full, most water will be a little over waist deep with a few very
short swims. At a minimum bring in a farmer john suit.
If you can get a recent conditions report, a more informed choice can be
made. If in doubt, bring a wet
suit. In very hot months a wet suit may be optional.
To get to the Trailhead
Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea
to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map
as you drive.
From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to
the junction of highways 95 and 276.
From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then
turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers
25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).
About 1.5 miles from the highway is a junction (TicabooDP-01)
of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13410 branches off to the
south. Continue east on BLM road 13400. Note: If you were headed
to the Smith Fork area you would turn south onto BLM road 13410.
About 2 miles farther is another junction
(TicabooDP-02) of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13420
branches off to the south. Continue east on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13420 to the south goes out to Cane Spring Well
about 1.25 miles south.
About 0.2 miles farther is short side road (TicabooDP-03) on the
left (north) that goes to a camp area.
Stay right to
continue on BLM road 13400. Beyond this point the roads
will have intermittent rough sections.
About 0.37
miles past here is a fork in the road where the two roads rejoin
a short distance later. The low road is typically the
smoothest.
About 1.7 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-04) of
BLM roads (13400 continues north-ish and 13430 branches off to
the south).
Continue north on BLM road 13400.
Note: If you were going to the roads between Warm Springs Creek
and Sevenmile Creek, you would turn south onto BLM road 13430.
About 0.3 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-05) of
BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13440 branches off to
the north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13440 to the south goes out to Colt Spring Well
about 0.4 miles north.
About 0.5 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-06) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13450 branches off to the
north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 0.9 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-07) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13430 branches off to the
south).
Turn south onto BLM road 13430.
Note: If you were
going to Tough, SF Ticaboo or Sleepytime Trio Canyons you would
continue northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 700 feet farther is a fork in the road (extWarmSpring).
At this fork stay left to continue toward the East Branch of
Seven Mile Creek.
About 0.4 miles farther is another fork in the road
(ext7MileCkEB). Veer right (more south) to continue toward
the East Branch of 7 Mile Creek.
About 1.0 mile farther is a junction (7MileCkEBDP-01) where a
side road joins in from the left. Continue straight
(south) past the side road.
About 0.5 miles farther is a jog in the road (7MileCkEBDP-02)
near an old stock pond. Turning left leads to a berm with
a survey marker by a stock pond. Veer right to continue south.
About 1.1 miles farther will be a wide pull out on the left side
of the road (pkHardDayHarvy). Park here for the start of
the Hard Day Harvey route. This parking spot is about 350
feet after the road turns left (east) around a corner.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
No exit vehicle is needed. This is done as a loop route.

The Approach:
Note:
The approach described here
bypasses the upper 0.8
miles of the drainage.
To avoid confusion rap 1
in Kelsey's book is in
the portion of the
canyon skipped by this
approach. If comparing this route
description with Kelsey's, this
my help clear some
possible confusion.
From the parking area (pkHardDayHarvy)
walk east along the road
for about 150 feet then
veer right and leave the
road walking across the
desert heading south
east.
About 650 feet from the
road walk around the
head (wHardDayRP-01) of
a side drainage that
runs southwest down into
the Hard Day Harvey
drainage. After
getting around the head
of the side drainage
veer right and walk
south west across the
desert.
About 0.2 miles farther
will be where you drop
down (wHardDayRP-02) to
the bench below.
About 200 feet farther
you will drop down
(wHardDayRP-03) to the
next lower bench.
Continue southwest.
About 350 feet farther
the route starts out
onto (wHardDayRP-04) an
obvious ridge that
continues south west.
Continue south west
along this ridge and
enjoy the good views
over part of Lake Powel
to the left (south).
About 0.3 miles farther
is where the point ends
and drops down onto
slick rock
(wHardDayRP-05).
About 150 feet after
starting down the slick
rock from the point of
the ridge is a large
drop off. Look for
a steep slide / down
climb on the right
(west). The last
15 feet of the down
climb (wHardDayRP-06) is
a steep slide where some
may want assistance.
From the bottom of the
down climb, walk about
90 feet south around to
the base of the slick
rock point (jHardDayExtApr).
Make note of this spot
and what it looks like.
The exit route will come
back to this spot on the
way back to the parking
area.
To continue down into
the top of Hard Day
Harvey, route find your
way south along the
slick rock for about 500
feet. Then begin
to veer right (west) and
work down the slick rock
for about 600 feet down
into the Hard Day Harvey
Drainage (yHardDayTp).
You should find a wide
open area in teh
drainage with an obvious
slot starting down
canyon.
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From top of the
slot (yHardDayTp) start
walking down the sand
bottom slot as it starts
to deepen.
A few hundred feet down
canyon is a down climb
of about 15 feet that
looks a little
intimidating from the
top but is not as difficult
as it looks.
Shortly after is another down
climb of about 12 feet
that
has the RDC wall bell
out a little near the
bottom.
Continue down the
now narrow canyon
stemming and galumphing
for a few hundred
feet before getting to a
section short wider
section.
At the end of the
short wide section
(wHardDayRP-08) is an
easy stem style down climb of about 15
feet. Just after is a short
elevator downclimb.
About 50 feet farther
is another
drop descending down
into narrow slot that
looks tempting to go
down in but should be
avoided as it
will likely prove
difficult for most.
Instead continue down
canyon by stemming high
for about 100 feet down
canyon before dropping
back to the floor in
wider slot.
After dropping to
the floor, the canyon
soon becomes very
narrow. Squeezing along the narrow
slot, you may find a
couple spots with water
to stem over. A
short distance into the
slot is a side chute
dropping in from LDC.
Next is a stemming down
climb of about 10 feet
shortly before the
canyon widens out.
Where the canyon starts
to widen is a
large pot hole
(wHardDayRP-09) to slide
about 15 feet down into.
You can control the slide
for all but the last 2
or 3 feet. Shorter
people will need a hand
line and or a capture at
the bottom. If
this pothole is full, it
will be chest deep if
tall or a swim if you
are short.
After the pothole the
canyon widens out a lot.
About 500 feet farther
is a large
boulder (wHardDayRP-10)
with a down climb of
about 8 feet on the LDC
(east) side.
Shortly after the
walls begin to slowly
slot up again.
Squeeze along the floor
or stem up as needed depending
on body size.
After a few hundred
feet, the slot opens up
to a brief wide section
(wHardDayRP-11) of about
150 feet long where
cross joints join
from both sides.
Continuing down canyon
the walls narrow again.
Squeeze down low or
stem up over tight spots
and choke stones where
needed.
Shortly into this narrow
section is a sharp left
the right jog. Just after
the left jog and before
the right jog is an arch on the
canyon floor making a
good landmark for
knowing where you are on this route
description.
At the right jog, smaller people
can stem down to squeeze along
the canyon floor.
Note:
I was 6 foot and about
170 pounds at the time
of my first trip here
and is about the max
for going low.
Smaller people can stem
down about 12 feet to go
low along the floor
while those larger will
need to stem up high as
they go around the right
hand jog. If you
stem high you will be
about 20 feet off the
deck for about 50 feet
before you can slide your
way back down to the
canyon floor.
A short distance farther the slot opens a
little to a rock fall
debris area choking the
canyon. It is possible
to climb up and over the
boulders on the LDC side
and rap down below the
debris. A simpler and more
fun option is to look
for a rabbit hole in the
boulder debris on the
RDC side and down climb
about 15 feet through
the dark hole to
get under a huge boulder
on a sandy floor.
When you get under the
large boulder you are at
the top of rap 1
(dHardDayR1).
Rap 1 (dHardDayR1) is anchored from
a choke stone and drops about
20 feet down a sloped
then almost vertical
wall. Depending on
water in the canyon the
bottom of rap 1 could be
dry or have water up to
belly deep. This is rap
2 in the Kelsey route
description. This
rap starts with gentle
slope and gradually gets
steeper then vertical.
Depending on group
skills it may make
things faster to provide
a hand line for all but
the last person and do a
capture for the last
person down climbing the
drop.
Down canyon of rap 1 the
canyon continues in
narrow slot with light
stemming and galumphing
between twisting walls.
Soon is a sharp
left and a sloped
stemming down climb.
If the canyon is dry
this down climb drops
down to a funnel like
area of sand. Once
down in the sand, turn left and climb
up out of the sand
funnel into
more narrow slot.
If the canyon is full of
water this spot will
likely be a swim for
about 10 feet.
Shortly after
is 10 foot down climb in a narrow area
where you may have to
wade across another
pool. This narrow
section is short and
opens to a 100 foot long sand
bottomed corridor with a
sharp right turn by a
cross joint at the down
canyon end (wHardDayRP-12).
About 100 feet into the
narrow slot is a sharp
left right jog with an
elevator downclimb of about 15
feet. The slot continues for
about 200 feet
before getting to a wide
open 200 foot long corridor.
At the end of the
corridor is a sharp left
(wHardDayRP-13) and a
cross joint entering a
100 foot narrow slot with a couple minor
down climbs.
The canyon then turns right into
another very short open
section where the
canyon then takes a
sharp left and starts
(wHardDayRP-14) into
another 100 foot narrow
section offering very little
difficulty.
Next is a brief open
area where and cross joints. On the
down canyon side of this
brief open area is the
top of rap 2.
Rap 2 (dHardDayR2) is anchored from
a large boulder about 30
feet back from the drop
and drops about 35 feet down a
steeply sloped wall into
a deep chamber like area
leading to more narrow
slot. If the canyon is
full of water you may
find chest deep water
for 10 to 15 feet.
Note:
Be sure to extend the
anchor webbing for rap 2
from the anchor all the
way over to the top of
the drop to minimize rope pull
issues and grooves.
A little over 100 feet
into the narrow slot
after rap 2 is a sharp
left right jog in the
slot with a down
climb into deeper slot. Again,
people my size and
smaller will just fit
down this down climb and
walk squeeze along the
bottom of the canyon.
At the bottom of the
down climb is where the
canyon turns sharp right
and you will need to
continue squeezing down
canyon up out of a
pothole if dry.
While squeezing down
canyon you will also be
working your way up a
sand slope making this
more difficult.
Note / Warning:
If there is water at the
bottom of the down climb
at this left right jog
it is best to stem high
and go over it about 15
feet above the deck.
Exiting the water and slick
clay mud
and continuing down
canyon can be difficult
and take
considerable effort
and force
prolonged water exposure.
If the pothole is full it will be a
swimmer for a
few feet, but
exiting can be very
difficult in
the tight constricted
space wet clay covered walls.
Larger people should
stem high going over the pothole below.
Shortly after the left
right jog is a 15 foot down
climb that can be
anchored from a choke
stone if needed.
Taller people can down
climb this drop
relatively easy and provide a
hand line for the rest.
Just after the
downclimb, the walls start to
bell out into a corridor
like area soon giving
way to rock fall
debris
(wHardDayRP-15).
Traverse along the RDC
wall to easily get
through the rock fall
debris area.
About 100 feet farther is a
15 foot downclimb that
is easier for tall
people but will be
awkward at the bottom as
the walls bell out.
The downclimb can be
anchored
from a choke stone if
desired. The last
person can provide a
hand line for the rest
and get a spot from
those below.
About 50 or 60 feet
farther in
twisting narrows is a
15 foot downclimb down into a
pothole (wHardDayRP-16)
with the last few feet
are steep and not easily
controlled. If
full of water, the pot hole will
be chest deep or a short
swim. Clay in the
area makes climbing up
out the other side difficult.
You can traverse a ledge
LDC to bypass this pot
hole but there is a lot
of loose rock on a steep
side slope to be aware
of.
About 150 feet farther the confluence (jGoodHardConf)
where Hard Day Harvey
and Good Day Jim join
one another.
About 250 or 300 feet
farther is the top of
the final rap for both
the Hard Day Harvey and
Good Day Jim routes.
Rap Final (dGoodHardR1) is about
300 feet down canyon of
the confluence, is anchored from
one of many boulders and
drops about 35 feet down
over boulder debris with
a short section of free
hang.
Continuing down canyon
after the final rap is
easy travel in wide
canyon with some easy
scrambles over boulder
debris.
About 0.3 miles down
canyon of the final rap
the canyon opens up very
wide after a dense
section of boulder
debris (wGoodHardRP-01).
Continuing down canyon
is more easy travel with
some easy scrambling to
get over boulders for
0.3 miles to the top of
a 50 foot drop in the
wash (yGoodHardBt).
This is the end of the
canyon section for both
the Good Day Jim and
Hard Day Harvey routes.
The Exit:
There are
two exit options out of
Good Day Jim and Hard
Day Harvey; East Exit
and West Exit. The
East exit is described
here. For
information on the West
exit see the Good Day
Jim route description.
For the East Exit:
From the top of the 50
foot drop (yGoodHardBt)
traverse along the wide
shelf on the LDC (east)
side.
About 0.25 miles along
the shelf will be a
drainage you will cross
over (wGoodEastRP-01).
About 700 feet farther
is the another drainage
(wGoodEastRP-02).
This drainage is like a
large bowl along the
shelf. Look south
east about 150 across
the bowl and look for a
slick rock nose that
appears to be between
two small drainages.
Go over to the bottom of
the slick rock nose then
climb up onto it.
When you get up onto the
slick rock nose
(wGoodEastRP-03) you
will be in a wide slick
rock drainage running up
to the south east.
About 400 feet up this
drainage will be the
bottom of a ridge
(wGoodEastRP-04)
continuing up to the
south east and climbing
up out of the drainage.
The ridge tops out
(wGoodEastRP-05) after
about 275 feet.
From the top out of the
ridge make an almost
U-turn and begin route
finding your way
northwest along the
slick rock over to a
saddle about 350 feet
away.
When you get to the
saddle (wGoodEastRP-06),
veer right (north east)
and traverse along the
slick rock. As you
traverse you will be
going north east
traversing along the
slick rock with the
crest of the ridge to
your right (south east).
Route find your way to
the top of a loose rocky
bowl where you can
scramble a short ledge
up to the mesa above
(wGoodEastRP-07).
When you get to the top
of the bowl you will
need to scramble up a
ledge about 12 feet
high. As you find
your self getting closer
to the top of the bowl
where you will climb out
you may be able to find
a faint use path.
Once up onto the dirt
mesa top
(wGoodEastRP-07), walk
along the flat dirt mesa
top for about 800 feet
north east on a bearing
of about 25 degrees.
Look for a bowl like
feature in the slick
rock ledge where you can
climb up
(wGoodEastRP-08) off the
mesa and onto the
rolling slick rock
above. The are
incredible views down
over parts of Lake
Powell if you take a
moment to walk over to
the cliff a few hundred
feet east.
Note / Warning:
Once up onto the slick
rock (wGoodEastRP-08)
the route along the
slick rock is convoluted
and not easy to
describe. There
also are likely multiple
routes that will work
just as well.
For general navigation
you will be trying to
get back to the point
where the entry route
for Hard Day Harvey and
this exit route meet.
That point is marked as
jHardDayExtApr on the
maps with this route
description. From
when you get up onto the
slick rock
(wGoodEastRP-08) the
point to aim for is
about 1.1 miles away
north on a bearing of 16
degrees (true north).
If you are carrying a
GPS and did not load
points in it before the
trip the point to aim
for is at N37.65533
W110.56115 in WGS84
datum.
Ok back to an attempt to
make sense of the
complex slick rock exit
route.
Once up on the slick
rock (wGoodEastRP-08)
walk about 550 feet
north west to an area
with some dirt
(wGoodEastRP-09) and
where you can naturally
begin traveling more
north.
About 0.2 miles north is
a large dirt area
(wGoodEastRP-10).
Some maps show that this
is near the head of a
drainage.
Continue about 300 feet
north over to the bottom
of a steep section of
slick rock
(wGoodEastRP-11).
Climbing this section of
slick rock is a little
sketchy due to the
feeling of exposure.
Sending one good climber
up this to set a rope
for the rest is a good
idea here. There
are a couple ways to
climb up this.
Note:
I think there may be an
easier way to get up
this by going far left
or right to find an
easier grade of slick
rock to scramble up but
this is not confirmed.
Continue just east of
north for about 500 feet
scrambling up 2
different slopes along
the way. From the
top of the second
scramble up
(wGoodEastRP-12)
continue north east
about 700 feet to a
cross joint you will
need to cross over.
When you get to the
cross joint drop into
the dirt floor of it
(wGoodEastRP-13) then
turn right and walk
south east about 300
feet to where you can
easily scramble north up
out of the cross joint.
After getting up out of
the cross joint route
find your way north
about 0.3 miles and
traverse near the top of
a slick rock peak
(wGoodEastRP-14).
As you work around this
peak you will have good
views down over the area
and over to the point
you are trying to get to
which will be 0.4 miles
north on a bearing of 12
degrees.
Route find your way over
to the base of up climb
that was also a down
climb on the route down
into Hard Day Harvey (jHardDayExtApr).
Then go over to the left
(west) side of the point
to start the climb up
(wHardDayRP-06).
The first 8 or 10 feet
of the up climb are
steep and you may need
to assist each other.
After getting up onto
the ridge above
(wHardDayRP-05) route
find your way about 0.6
miles north along the
ridge and through the
desert back to teh road
where you parked (pkHardDayHarvy).
