Rappelling and anchor gear, Ropes for rappels up
to 260 feet, pull cord for raps up to 140 feet and 40 feet of 1 inch webbing for sling placement. Wet
suits generally should not be needed. In cool weather if the
potholes in the lower section are full a wet suit might be desired.
This route description was written for a 260 rope to be set at the
top of a series of potholes starting into the lower section and left
behind. After the canyon is completed the rope can be
retrieved by hiking in to get it. Other anchor tools may be
required to descend the pothole section with shorter ropes.
John and I were both looking this slot over and wanted to
go see what it had to offer. As it turns out a few other people had also
been looking at the slot and checking out parts of the upper canyon over the
years. First known full descent date 03/17/12
Double Entendre got its name due to the dual nature of
the canyon. The top and bottom sections of the canyon are very
different from one another yet are indeed one water course. Kind of
like a Double Entendre has two meanings but is indeed part of the same
phrase.
The top and bottom portions of Double Entendre are VERY
different from one another. Both are fun and both are worth checking
out. Doing the full route requires a shuttle vehicle to be set.
It is also possible to do just the upper portion of Double Entendre then hike
back to the car for a short fun run with no shuttle vehicle
required. The upper section is VERY different from the
lower portion of the canyon. So while the quick no shuttle
fun run through the top portion looks attractive, bear in mind the lower portion is like
a completely different canyon all together and worth visiting
when you have time.
If you plan to do the
full route be aware that
minimal gear is a good
idea in the upper
section due to skinny
stuff. A good
route option for doing
the full route is to route
find your way along the
LDC (west) rim of the
canyon and drop down
into the open mid
section (yDublEntendMd).
Descend the lower
portion of the canyon
leaving the long rope at
the top of the long
pothole section.
After completing the
lower canyon and exiting
up to the exit vehicle,
drive back the entry
vehicles again.
From the entry parking
spot go to the top of
the upper canyon and
descend the upper canyon
to the mid point where
the long rope was left.
Retrieve the long rope
and route find your way
back up to the vehicles.
A 40 foot
piece of rope or webbing
may be a good idea in
the upper section to
assist people on drops
they may not be
comfortable on.
The upper section of Double Entendre is all downclimbs but 40 foot of rope or
webbing is suggested to assist people with drops they may be uncomfortable
with. Also bring a small pack in the upper section and be prepared to
hang it for a short portion of stemming.
The lower section of Double Entendre starts with a
series of potholes dropping steeply down a deep slot. At the time of
our first 03/17/12 none of the potholes were keepers. Some of the the
potholes were sand filled so scouring can change the depths dramatically.
Be aware that if things get scoured out some of the potholes might require a
little work to get out of. After the pothole section the canyon turns
left and drops down over a ledge with a great alcove and hanging garden.
There is poison ivy at the bottom of the last two raps so try to steer clear
where you can.
The upper section of the canyon is rated a a 3 in
technical difficulty while the lower portion is rated a 4 in technical
difficulty. The second rappel (the one just after the long pothole
rappel) uses a chockestone anchor which may be difficult to set which is
what gives the lower section the 4 rating in technical difficulty.
To get to the Trailhead
Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea
to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map
as you drive.
From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to
the junction of highways 95 and 276.
From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then
turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers
25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).
About 1.5 miles from the highway is a junction (TicabooDP-01)
of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13410 branches off to the
south. Continue east on BLM road 13400. Note: If you were headed
to the Smith Fork area you would turn south onto BLM road 13410.
About 2 miles farther is another junction
(TicabooDP-02) of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13420
branches off to the south. Continue east on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13420 to the south goes out to Cane Spring Well
about 1.25 miles south.
About 0.2 miles farther is short side road (TicabooDP-03) on the
left (north) that goes to a camp area.
Stay right to
continue on BLM road 13400. Beyond this point the roads
will have intermittent rough sections.
About 0.37
miles past here is a fork in the road where the two roads rejoin
a short distance later. The low road is typically the
smoothest.
About 1.7 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-04) of
BLM roads (13400 continues north-ish and 13430 branches off to
the south).
Continue north on BLM road 13400.
Note: If you were going to the roads between Warm Springs Creek
and Sevenmile Creek, you would turn south onto BLM road 13430.
About 0.3 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-05) of
BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13440 branches off to
the north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13440 to the south goes out to Colt Spring Well
about 0.4 miles north.
About 0.5 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-06) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13450 branches off to the
north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 0.9 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-07) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13430 branches off to the
south).
Turn south onto BLM road 13430.
Note: If you were
going to Tough, SF Ticaboo or Sleepytime Trio Canyons you would
continue northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 700 feet farther is a fork in the road (extWarmSpring).
At this fork stay left to continue toward the East Branch of
Seven Mile Creek.
About 0.4 miles farther is another fork in the road
(ext7MileCkEB). Veer left (east) to continue toward the
Dante's.
About 1.1 miles farther is a junction where a side road joins in
from the southwest (TicabooDP-08). Veer left (east) to
continue toward the Dante's.
About 0.4 miles farther is a junction where a side road joins in
from the southwest (extTicabooMesa). Stay left and follow
the road as it turns and begins to head north.
About 1 mile farther is a major road junction (extDantes).
Turning right at this junction will lead over toward the Dante
System. To continue to the parking spot for the start of
Double Entendre stay left at this junction and continue
northeast.
About 800 feet after passing the junction the road will turn
left and begin to head northwest. About 200 feet after
turning this corner find a spot to pull over and get off the
road (pkDublEntendr). There is no clearing to park in.
Just find a spot where you think you can safely get your vehicle
out of the way of through traffic.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
You can do just the upper portion of Double Entendre then hike
back to the car for a short fun run with no shuttle vehicle
required. The upper section is VERY different from the
lower portion of the canyon. So while the quick no shuttle
fun run looks attractive bear in mind the lower portion is like
a completely different canyon all together and worth visiting
when you have time.
If you are doing the full route you will need to park a shuttle
vehicle. To leave the shuttle vehicle follow the drive in
directions until you get near the end of the drive and arrive at
the junction (extDantes). Instead of driving northeast on
the road, turn right and follow the road southeast toward the
Dante System.
After driving about 1 mile southeast there will be a side road
joining from the left (extTicabooCrek). Turn left on this
road and drive northeast about 0.6 miles to the end of the road
where there is a large turn out (pkTicabooCrek). Park at
this turn out to leave the shuttle vehicle.

The Approach:
From the parking spot (pkDublEntendr)
walk northeast down the
slope down into a small
drainage ruining down to
the slick rock.
About 700 feet from the
parking spot the dirt
ends and the drainage
meets slick rock
(wDublEnteRP-01).
After dropping to the
slickrock walk about 500
feet north over to the
head of Double Entendre
(yDublEntendTp).
Along the way you will
pass by a few small
potholes forming in the
drainage before getting
to the head of the
Double Entendre where
the drainage deepens.
Note:
If you are doing only
the 1100 foot long upper section and
you have brought minimal
gear drop in and have
fun then escape out of
the mid point and head
back to the vehicles.
If you plan to do the
full route be aware that
minimal gear is a good
idea in the upper
section due to skinny
stuff. A good
route option for doing
the full route is to route
find your way along the
LDC (west) rim of the
canyon and drop down
into the open mid
section (yDublEntendMd).
Descend the lower
portion of the canyon
leaving the long rope at
the top of the long
pothole section.
After completing the
lower canyon and exiting
up to the exit vehicle,
drive back the entry
vehicles again.
From the entry parking
spot go to the top of
the upper canyon and
descend the upper canyon
to the mid point where
the long rope was left.
Retrieve the long rope
and route find your way
back up to the vehicles.
A 40 foot
piece of rope or webbing
may be a good idea in
the upper section to
assist people on drops
they may not be
comfortable on.
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
Upper
Section of Double
Entendre.................
From head of
Double Entendre (yDublEntendTp)
there is some light
scrambling, an easy
downclimb of about 15
feet in a V shaped slot
and walking for about
200 feet to the top of a
drop of about 25 feet
(wDublEnteRP-02).
The drop is steep V slot
to slide / downclimb.
About 60 feet down
canyon is a wide ledge
area with a drop of
about 35 feet.
This drop can be
downclimbed around on
the LDC side by
downclimbing along a
crack on a steeply
sloped wall. The
last 15 feet could be a
fast slide if care is
not taken. There
are boulders in the area
that could be used as an
anchor but downclimbing
is encouraged to keep
the area clean.
One option would also be
to meat anchor someone
down the drop then they
could provide a spot for
those downclimbing
after.
Just after the downclimb
is some boulder debris
to go up and over before
reaching a slot to
downclimb about 20 feet.
The downclimb in the
slot is vertical but
moderately easy to do.
There are a bunch of
choke stones to
downclimb next to on
your way down this drop.
About 30 feet down
canyon is the top of
another slot to
downclimb into.
The top of this drop has
a large choke stone to
downclimb under then is
an elevator style
downclimb of about 25 to
30 feet.
At the bottom of the
elevator you can walk
along the canyon floor
but the walls are narrow
and taking your pack off
will help you pass
through. Even
large guys should fit
fine in here if they
have their pack off.
This narrow section has
a couple spots where
water might be waist
deep if recent rains
have occurred but it
looks like the canyon
will not hold water
long.
Shortly down canyon
is another drop that
slopes down at
about a 45 degree angle.
Stem / galumph down the
slot at the 45 degree
angle to continue down
canyon. The bottom
of the slot here is too
narrow for most people
so you will need to stem
up off the deck about 10
to 15 feet. There
is little chance of
taking a fall since it
gets narrow below.
About 80 feet down
canyon you can get to
the floor where you can
walk again.
After walking the floor
for a while you will
have a few spots to stem
up and over and galumph.
As these come to an end
there may be a section
of sand that dips down
and holds water but with
a little work you can
stem / galumph over it.
Then the canyon opens up
to wide open spaces
where you can escape the
canyon on the LDC side
(wDublEnteRP-03).
Next walk al little over
200 feet down to the top
of the lower section of
Double Entendre (yDublEntendMd).
Note:
If you are only doing
the upper section you
can escape the canyon
here on the LDC (west)
side and route find your
way along the rim and
back to the vehicles
reversing your approach
route.
Lower section of
Double
Entendre...........................
The lower section starts
(yDublEntendMd) with a
series of 9 potholes that
quickly drop down
through a deep slot over
about 200 feet.
Note:
On our first visit we
anchored from the top of
the lower section from a
small shrub and used a
300 foot rope to get
through the series of 9
potholes. We left
the rope there and hiked
in to retrieve it after
completing the route.
If you do the same
please do not pull the
rope from the anchor
point as this creates
rope grooves.
Instead walk out to a
point about 130 feet on
the RDC (east) side and
pull the rope from there
(wDublEntePul)
to minimize rope
grooves. You will
need about 260 feet of
rope to get down into
pothole 9. I am
calling this rap 1 for
Double Entendre since we
used one long rope for
the series of potholes.
You can easily downclimb
through the first four
potholes with downclimbs
to about 8 feet.
Then the drops begin to
get bigger.
The drop into pothole 5
is about 15 feet.
Pothole 5 will be about
chest deep if filled
with water and not
difficult to get out of.
The drop into pothole 6
is about 20 feet.
Pothole 6 is very
shallow.
After pothole 6 is a
short narrow section
leading over to the top
of pothole 7.
The drop into pothole 7
is about 15 feet.
Pothole 7 is also
shallow.
The drop into pothole 8
is about 25 feet with a
little free hang on the
way down pothole 8 is
also shallow.
After pothole 8 is a
short walking section.
The drop into pothole 9
is about 40 feet down a
sloped drop as you start
around a corner to the
right. Pothole 9
is not really a pothole
but more of a
sand-filled narrow
section ending the
series of potholes.
From pothole 9
(wDublEnteRP-04) the
canyon turns right.
About 60 feet down
canyon starts a narrow
section to galumph in
for few feet over to the
top of rap 2.
Rap 2 (dDublEnteR2) is
anchored from choke
stones in the slot and
drops about 60 feet with
the lower half being
free hanging. At
the bottom of rap 2 is a
very large ledge and an
alcove with unique
featuring on the wall
that makes it look a
little like an owl's
face..... an OwlCove? Also at
the bottom of rap 2 is
poison ivy so take care
to stay away from it
where possible.
The chokestone anchor
may wash out due to
flooding and a new one
may need to be set.
There are few stones
around and only a few
spots to securely place
them. Be prepared
to possible farm rocks
from below the drop if
none can be found at the
top.
Rap 3 (dDublEnteR3)
is about 80 feet from
rap 2 and is anchored
from a rock wedged in
feature down in a
pothole. This
anchor may take a little
care to get it set
properly. An
alternate anchor option
is a chokestone in the
slot above the pothole.
Rap 3 drops about 140 feet
with a large ledge part
way down the rap.
There is also poison ivy
at the bottom of this
rap.
After getting to the
bottom of the last rap
route find your way down
canyon to where the
drainage dumps into the
South Fork of Ticaboo
Creek and comes to an
end (yDublEntendBt).
As you near the end of
the drainage and get
close to the South Fork
of Ticaboo Creek you can
bypass the last drop by
going around on the LDC
(northwest) side.
The Exit:
From the
end of Double Entendre
where it dumps into the
South Fork of Ticaboo
Creek turn right and
walk east down canyon.
As you walk look at the
large slots on the right
(south) coming down from
the Ticaboo Mesa.
Counting these canyons /
slots helps with
navigation. The
bottom of Off The Hook
Canyon (yOffTheHookBt)
is 0.5 miles down canyon
of Double Entendre and
is the third one.
The bottom of Off The
Hook has a drop of about
20 feet with a large
marshy pool at the
bottom.
Travel down the South
Fork of Ticaboo Creek
can be done in the wash
or using multiple social
trails up out of the
wash in some places.
Continue down South Fork Ticaboo Creek counting the side slots / canyons
on the right.
About 0.4 miles down
will be where the
drainage for the next
one meets Ticaboo Creek
then a second joins in
about 500 feet after.
The spots where these
drainages meet Ticaboo
Creek are obvious and
easy to spot.
The third drainage
(jTicaCrekExt1) is the
one you will use for the
exit route up out of
South Fork Ticaboo Creek
and comes in about 500
feet after passing the
second. The exit
drainage can be easily
missed since there is no
obvious wash dropping
into Ticaboo Creek.
You don't notice the
actual wash until you
climb up onto a ledge
about 20 feet high.
If you keep your eyes
open this is easy to
find but you need to be
on the look out.
Note:
The exit drainage is the
last one before reaching
the confluence of the
South and Main forks of
Ticaboo Creek. If
you pass the exit
drainage it is about 0.5
miles down to the
confluence.
From the bottom of the
drainage marked
(jTicaCrekExt1) scramble
your way about 20 feet
up onto the slick rock
shelf on the southeast
side of Ticaboo Creek.
If you find the
scrambling a little more
difficult than you would
like you can walk about
200 feet southwest
upstream in Ticaboo
Creek to find an easier
spot to scramble up to
the slick rock shelf (
wTicCrkExRP-01).
Once up on the slickrock
shelf walk southeast up
the drainage about
500 feet to a boulder
debris field
(wTicCrkExRP-02).
Scramble your way up
though the boulder
debris field and
continue up the
drainage. As you
go up the drainage there
will be a couple short
easy upclimbs.
About 700 feet up the
drainage from the
boulder debris field
(wTicCrkExRP-03) look
for a way to scramble up
out of the drainage on
the left (south) side.
There are a few ways to
scramble up so pick one
you like.
After starting up out of
the drainage continue up
the steep slope
traveling southwest for
about 350 feet to get to
the top out
(wTicCrkExRP-04) where
some cairns have been
placed on the flat dirt
are at the top of the
slope.
Note:
As you climb the slope
please stay off as much
crypto biotic soil as
you can. This
place is crammed full of
crypto. Try to
stay off of it by
walking in micro
drainages and stepping
on rock where possible.
If you see someone's
tracks, consider
following them. As
time passes maybe the
community can wear a
single path along this
slope so we can minimize
the damage to the crypto
by keeping it along one
path.
After getting to the top
of the slope you will be
in a wide open flat dirt
area (wTicCrkExRP-04)
turn left and walk about
500 feet south toward a
rocky point. Again
please try to stay off
the crypto and if you
find someone's tracks
please consider
following them to
minimize damage to the
crypto biotic soils.
As you get toward the
point walk over to the
east side of it.
As you traverse along
the east side of the
point look for the
bottom of a chute
(wTicCrkExRP-05).
This will be your route
up onto the point.
After getting to the top
of the chute turn left
and route find your way
south along the ridge.
You will need to
scramble your way around
over boulders and
featured slickrock for
about 150 feet to where
the ridge becomes smooth
slickrock
(wTicCrkExRP-06).
Once on the slickrock
continue up the ridge
for about 1,000 feet to
a flat spot with some
sand (wTicCrkExRP-07).
Continue up the ridge
for about 800 feet to a
spot where the ridge
becomes very steep for
about 12 feet
(wTicCrkExRP-08).
This spot may require
you to use your hands
and feet for a short
distance.
About 650 feet farther
up the ridge you will
get to the top of the
slickrock finger ridge
(wTicCrkExRP-09).
There is a deconstructed
cairn (rocks spread out
and suspiciously placed
on the slick rock).
There are 4 white rocks
making up the
deconstructed cairn and
look obviously out of
place on the pinkish
sandstone.
From the deconstructed
cairn (wTicCrkExRP-09)
turn right and route
find your way southwest
along the shelf you are
on. About 750 feet
from the deconstructed
cairn is the bottom of a
chute (wTicCrkExRP-10)
that will allow you to
upclimb to the shelf
above. Scramble up
this chute to gain
access to the shelf
above. The chute
is about 60 feet tall
and is full of loose
debris to scramble over.
Once at the top of the
chute (wTicCrkExRP-11),
turn right and walk west
along the dirt slope for
about 400 feet where you
will skirt around the
top of a small shallow
drainage
(wTicCrkExRP-12).
Continue west for about
650 feet and cross over
another shallow drainage
(wTicCrkExRP-13).
Then continue about 350
feet west to where the
exit vehicle is parked (pkTicabooCrek).
