(possibly 4WD if road conditions are bad)
Permit Required - No
Rappelling and anchor gear, Ropes and or pull cords for rappels up
to 65 feet and 60 feet of 1 inch webbing for sling placement.
Note / Warning
While rap 2 is the longest
rap at 45 feet, you may need
more rope depending on how
the anchor was set. If
the anchor webbing is not
extended all the way over to
the drop you will need
significantly more rope.
It is unlikely it will be needed, but you should be prepared with potshots or small
backpacks to toss for pothole escape.
If the canyon is full, plan on getting wet to about waist deep and possibly one short swim
of a few feet. In warm weather wet suits are not needed but will be
nice in cooler temps especially from the waist down. The
canyon is usually dry but having a minimal wet suit along is good
for "just in case".
The Dantes are a
collection of
Canyons offering short and
challenging routes in the Ticaboo
Mesa area. More than one of
the Dante Canyons can be done in a
day if a longer day is desired.
The canyons in the Dante system go
by the names Purgatory (aka Dave's
Not Dead), Inferno, Limbo and Paradiso.
Natural anchors are
used in the Dante's. While
enjoying the Dante Canyons, please
pay close attention to how you set
up anchors and try to minimize or
eliminate creating more rope
grooves. Over the years only
minor rope grooves have been
inflicted on the canyon walls.
Please try to follow in the foot
steps of those before you and keep
rope grooves to a minimum.
Note
/ Navigation Warning:
The exit route up out of the Dante
Canyons is difficult to explain
(written or verbal). Be aware
you may have some route finding to
do on your way up out of the system.
A GPS may be helpful if you plan to
use the GPS coordinates on from this
route description.
Another fun note is
the large wash that Purgatory dumps
into is sometimes referred to as
Bright's Wash, named after William
Bright.
Paradiso uses a
different approach route than some
of the other Dante Canyons.
Note
- Warning:
The pothole at the bottom of rap 5
should not be too much of an issue
for people to get across. But
the pothole could potentially be an
issue for some groups so Paradiso
could arguably have a
technical rating of 4 rather than a
tech rating of 3.
Caution:
Another thing to be aware of is the
loose flaky rock on the canyon
walls. This can be a bit of an
issue when stemming down drops.
At the bottom of
rap 5 is a pothole about 5 feet in
diameter and 13 feet deep. Tall
people can step over the pothole
while still on rope and assist
others across as they rap down. If
the pot hole is not full of water
and only short people are in the
group, a more creative way to get
across the pothole will need to be
explored. Depending on the group or
water level this could be the most
difficult part of the canyon, or it
can be a step over and almost not
worth mention other than it looks
cool.
Depending on water levels a couple potholes down canyon
of rap 1 may also need some creativity to get up out of.
If the canyon is full of water there are a few spots
where you could swim if you got down into a pothole. But all of the
deep water is avoidable by stemming over. If the canyon is full, plan
on possibly getting wet up to waist deep at most, unless you fall into a
water filled pothole. With that said Paradiso does not normally
have much water in it.
To get to the Trailhead
Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea
to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map
as you drive.
From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to
the junction of highways 95 and 276.
From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then
turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers
25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).
About 1.5 miles from the highway is a junction (TicabooDP-01)
of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13410 branches off to the
south. Continue east on BLM road 13400. Note: If you were headed
to the Smith Fork area you would turn south onto BLM road 13410.
About 2 miles farther is another junction
(TicabooDP-02) of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13420
branches off to the south. Continue east on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13420 to the south goes out to Cane Spring Well
about 1.25 miles south.
About 0.2 miles farther is short side road (TicabooDP-03) on the
left (north) that goes to a camp area.
Stay right to
continue on BLM road 13400. Beyond this point the roads
will have intermittent rough sections.
About 0.37
miles past here is a fork in the road where the two roads rejoin
a short distance later. The low road is typically the
smoothest.
About 1.7 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-04) of
BLM roads (13400 continues north-ish and 13430 branches off to
the south).
Continue north on BLM road 13400.
Note: If you were going to the roads between Warm Springs Creek
and Sevenmile Creek, you would turn south onto BLM road 13430.
About 0.3 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-05) of
BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13440 branches off to
the north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13440 to the south goes out to Colt Spring Well
about 0.4 miles north.
About 0.5 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-06) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13450 branches off to the
north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 0.9 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-07) of BLM
roads (13400 continues northeast and 13430 branches off to the
south).
Turn south onto BLM road 13430.
Note: If you were
going to Tough, SF Ticaboo or Sleepytime Trio Canyons you would
continue northeast on BLM road 13400.
About 700 feet farther is a fork in the road (extWarmSpring).
At this fork stay left to continue toward the East Branch of
Seven Mile Creek.
About 0.4 miles farther is another fork in the road
(ext7MileCkEB). Veer left (east) to continue toward the
Dante's.
About 1.1 miles farther is a junction where a side road joins in
from the southwest (TicabooDP-08). Veer left (east) to
continue toward the Dante's.
About 0.4 miles farther is a junction where a side road joins in
from the southwest (extTicabooMesa). Stay left and follow
the road as it turns and begins to head north.
About 1 mile farther is a major road junction (extDantes).
Turn right (southeast) to continue toward the Dante's.
About 1 mile farther is a junction where a road joins in from
the left (extTicabooCamp). Continue straight (southeast)
toward the Dante's.
About 0.2 miles farther the road dead ends (tDanteCanyons1).
Park here to start the Dante Canyon routes.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
No exit vehicle is needed. This is done as a loop route.

The Approach:
From the trailhead
(tDanteCanyons1) look
north east toward an
obvious flat topped peak
about 0.4 miles away.
The route over to
Paradiso Canyon skirts
around the south side of
this peak along the rim
above the slick rock
valley below. Between
the trailhead and the
peak is part of the
sandstone valley you
will have to skirt
around.
From the trailhead
(tDanteCanyons1) walk
north east about 150
feet over to the rim
overlooking the
sandstone below. Turn
left (north) to walk the
rim above the
sandstone. The rim will
contour east and run
toward the south end of
the obvious flat topped
peak.
About 0.6 miles from the
trail head the route
around the rim will come
to a point south of the
obvious flat topped peak
(wParadisoRP-01). From
this point you can see
the inlet for Ticaboo
Creek to the north and
over the Dantes area and
Good Hope Bay to the
south.
From the point
(wParadisoRP-01)
continue along the rim
going north then
contouring back east
again. About 0.45 miles
along the rim from the
point look for the start
(wParadisoRP-02) of a
route to the right
(southeast) down to the
slick rock below. There
are likely multiple ways
down to the slick rock
below.
Before starting the
route down from the rim,
look southeast and
notice a large flat area
in the sandstone below
resembling a large
saddle. Route find your
way about 1000 feet down
along the slick rock to
a shallow drainage in
the semi wide open area
of slick rock
(yParadisoTp). Aim for
a point about 500 feet
west of a the head of a
large drainage running
down to the east. You
are now at the top of
Paradiso Canyon
(yParadisoTp).
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
Once down in the
drainage for Paradiso
(yParadisoTp) turn right
(south) and start down
Paradiso Canyon.
About 250 feet down
canyon is the top of a
narrow slot to stem down
into (wParadisoRP-03).
The top of the slot is a
stemming down climb of
about 10 feet down to
and or over a pothole
with a much larger drop
on the other side of the
pothole. The drop on
the other side of the
pothole is also a down
climb and is about 15
feet in a narrow
vertical slot. This
second down climb is a
little difficult and
feels exposed. For
safety, one of the
better down climbers in
the group could provide
a top belay then down
climb last.
Continuing down canyon
you will need to stem
along between the walls
since the bottom is too
narrow to walk in.
About 250 feet down
canyon, the walls widen
a little allowing one to
walk on the floor again.
After a very short walk
is the top of another
drop into another tight
slot (wParadisoRP-04).
This is a down climb
into a vertical narrow
slot of about 15 feet.
At the bottom of the
down climb continue down
canyon a short distance
in a very narrow slot.
On the other side of the
narrow slot the walls
widen again where you
will find a lot of
boulder debris from rock
fall. Climb over,
through or around the
rock fall debris.
For about 700 feet down
canyon of the rock fall
debris area the canyon
will offer stemming down
canyon, a down climb of
about 8 feet and a drop
down into a tight deep
slanted narrow slot. At
the end of the tight
deep slanted narrow slot
the canyon turns sharp
left (wParadisoRP-05).
Where the canyon turns
sharp left
(wParadisoRP-05) you
will be greeted with a
straight narrow slot
with a soft sandy floor
to walk on. This slot
is like a long hallway
of about 100 feet with a
very narrow exit. Some
people will have to drop
to one knee in the sand
to find a wide spot to
pass through. The
exit of the narrow spot
is wider at the ground
but sand levels change
and you may need to move
some sand around to help
out.
Note:
This section can be too
tight for big barrel
chested people.
Really large people may
need to stem up and over
the short tight section.
If you are a big guy,
you may have a little
stemming and work ahead
of you in here but it is
a short section.
Just after the long
hallway the canyon turns
sharp right where there
is another rock fall
debris area. After the
rock fall debris is a
long section of canyon
to walk for about 400
feet to where the water
course takes a sharp
left then right jog
(wParadisoRP-06). Where
the canyon takes this
sharp left then right
jog there are obvious
cross joints dropping
down on both sides.
About 150 feet down
canyon of the left right
jog the canyon narrows
up again where you will
drop down into a deep
narrow sculpted slot.
At the start of the
narrow slot is a down
climb / slide of about
15 feet to a pool that
will be about chest deep
but can be stemmed
over. The narrow
section is short before
the walls widen out.
Continuing down canyon
involves some walking
and some stemming to go
over a few pools and
mud. The mud in this
section of canyon is
more clay like and can
make things slick if you
get your feet in it.
About 250 feet down
canyon is the start of
another deep narrow
section with a down
climb of about 20 feet
to start down into it
(wParadisoRP-08). The
start of this slot is
also where there are
cross joints dropping
down to the canyon on
both sides. There are a
few more short down
climbs shortly after
getting down into the
slot. The walls in the
slot are wavy and
beautiful. This slot
seems to have a lot of
water holding capacity
in the holes since it
gets very little sun.
About 200 feet down
canyon in the slot is
rap 1.
Rap 1 (dParadiso-R1) is
a little over 200 feet
down canyon into the
slot, is anchored from a
choke stone of gray rock
and drops about 35 feet
down a sloped wall to a
pothole about 5 feet in
diameter. When you get
down to the top of the
pothole you will need to
get across to the other
side of it. If the
pothole is full of water
this would not present
too much danger. If the
pothole is dry it will
be about 5 feet in
diameter and about 13
feet deep. Taller
people can step over the
hole while still on
rope. If there are no
taller people in the
group a creative
solution may need to be
found.
Just on the other side
of rap 1 is a drop of
about 6 feet down to
small room like area
with a waist deep pool.
On the other side of the
small room is a slide of
about 10 feet to another
larger room. The drop
into the larger room is
not an easy down climb
since it is slick. For
safety, one of the
better down climbers in
the group could provide
a top belay then down
climb last while getting
a partner assist from
those below.
On the other side of the
larger room are some
short down climbs
through a few potholes.
If water levels are low
a couple of these
potholes may need some
creativity to get up out
of. As these potholes
end the canyon opens up
onto a large ledge.
About 100 feet down
canyon on the ledge
leads to a drop
(wParadisoRP-09)
overlooking a series of
potholes running down
canyon toward another
drop. This drop is
easily bypassed by
walking the rim RDC and
scrambling down the
slick rock.
Rap 2 (dParadiso-R2) is
about 150 feet down
canyon at the other end
of the string of
potholes. Rap 2 is
anchored from a dead man
anchor in a pot hole
about 25 feet back from
the drop. Rap 2 drops
about 45 feet down a
wall with a seep and
some hanging gardens
with the last 15 feet
being overhung. The
anchor webbing should be
extended the 25 feet
over to where the drop
gets steep to allow for
a clean and easy rope
pull and use about 45
feet of rope travel. If
the anchor webbing is
not extended the rope
travel from bottom of
rap up to the actual
anchor will be about 70
feet.
After rap 2 walk and
scramble down canyon
about 300 feet to where
the LDC canyon wall ends
(yParadisoBt) and you
are out in an obvious
wide open drainage not
part of Paradiso Canyon.
The Exit:
Continue
down canyon about 350
feet to another drainage
joins in from LDC (north
west). This drainage is
the bottom of TTT Canyon
(yTTT-Bt).
Continue south down
canyon for about 0.4
miles to the confluence
with another large
drainage (jDanteConf).
Turn right and walk
north up stream for
about 500 feet to the
confluence of other
drainages
(wDanteExtRP-01). This
is where you will start
the exit route up out of
the Dantes.
From (wDanteExtRP-01)
walk about 140 feet
north up the Inferno /
Limbo drainage to a spot
where you can easily
start walking up
(wDanteExtRP-02) the
dirt slope to the cliff
band to the right
(east).
From (wDanteExtRP-02)
walk up the dirt slope
about 200 feet to the
base of the cliff band
and scramble up a
drainage looking indent
in the cliff band.
After scrambling to the
top of the indent
(wDanteExtRP-03) you
will be topped out on a
large ledge.
Once on the large ledge
turn right (south) and
traverse along the ledge
for about 200 feet
around the tip of a
point along the ledge to
the start of a bowl
shaped indent
(wDanteExtRP-04).
Walk up the bowl shaped
indent and climb up the
ledges to get to the top
of the bowl and traverse
north a little over 100
feet up onto the ridge
(wDanteExtRP-05). This
ridge is running between
Limbo Canyon which is on
the left (north west)
and Paradiso which is on
the right (south east).
Once up on the ridge
(wDanteExtRP-05) walk
north east on the
sandstone ridge.
Continue north east up
the ridge for about 650
feet to a small knob to
go up over or around
(wDanteExtRP-06).
From the knob continue
north east about 350
feet to the start of
steep section of the
sandstone ridge to
scramble up
(wDanteExtRP-07). On
the climb up, there is a
good view to the right
(east) down into
Paradiso. The top out
of the climb is about 75
or 100 feet from the
bottom of the climb /
scramble. From the top
out continue up the
slope to about 200 feet
then drop down into a
drainage running across
the ridge
(wDanteExtRP-08).
The drainage crossing
the ridge
(wDanteExtRP-08) has a
sharp drop off on the
right (east) dropping
down toward Paradiso
Canyon. Walk over very
close to this drop off
and find a way to
scramble up the other
side (north) to continue
along the ridge. This
spot will be more of a
climb than a scramble
but an easy climb.
After getting up out of
the drainage crossing
the ridge, continue
north up the ridge about
200 feet to the stat of
a steep section of slick
rock to climb
(wDanteExtRP-09). The
scramble up the slick
rock here is not
difficult but hands will
be needed. The scramble
goes for about 400 feet
to the top out then
continues another 100
feet or so and drops
down into another
drainage running across
the ridge
(wDanteExtRP-10). At
the top out of the climb
you can see the cars
parked at the trailhead
about 0.6 miles to the
northwest if you look
close.
The drainage crossing
the ridge
(wDanteExtRP-10) pours
off to the right (east)
down into Paradiso and
to the left (west) down
into Limbo. Cross over
the drainage and
scramble up a sandstone
nose to continue up the
ridge.
About 200 feet after
getting up out of the
last drainage the climb
will top out and start
to curve left to the
northwest. Continue
about another 400 feet
and find a way to drop
down into the next
drainage crossing the
ridge (wDanteExtRP-11)
that is kind of deep and
narrow with a sandy
floor as you continue
northwest. After
dropping down into this
drainage follow it
northwest about 250 or
300 feet to where it
opens up in a very large
flat sandy ledge or
landing
(wDanteExtRP-12).
Continue across the
sandy landing and
continue along the
narrow drainage. A
little over 500 feet
after crossing the large
sandy landing area the
route will cross over
another drainage (jLimbo).
This is the drainage
leading down to Limbo.
After crossing the
drainage that leads down
to Limbo (jLimbo),
continue northwest
across the sandstone.
About 700 feet after
crossing the drainage to
Limbo, the route will
cross over yet another
drainage that leads
south down to Inferno
Canyon (jInferno).
After crossing over the
drainage down to
Inferno, will be a large
wide open ledge or
shelf. Walk along the
ledge as it curves
southwest then to the
right to the north.
Walking along this shelf
or ledge will skirt
around a prominent point
on a cliff band and over
to the head of Purgatory
Canyon (yPurgatoryTp).
The head of Purgatory is
about 1000 feet after
crossing the drainage
leading down to Inferno.
Note:
If you are exiting after
completing Purgatory,
please take a moment to
walk down to rap 1 and
retrieve your anchor
webbing and rapid.
If you are completing
another canyon and feel
like taking the time you
can walk over and see if
any is left there you
can clean up.
Continue northwest from
the top of Purgatory
across the sandstone.
Traverse along the
sandstone on whatever
feels like a natural
route staying high but
well below the cliff
band on the right
(north). About 450 feet
after crossing the top
of Purgatory Canyon you
will cross over a small
drainage which is a
minor fork of the top of
Purgatory
(wDanteExtRP-13).
After crossing the small
drainage leading down
toward Purgatory, walk
west about 150 feet to
the base of the cliff
band where you can find
a spot to climb out
(wDanteExtRP-14). This
spot to climb out may be
difficult when wearing a
heavy pack. This spot
is steep and has only a
few hand holds for about
15 feet up the slick
rock band.
After climbing up the
steep 15 foot section of
the sandstone cliff
band, traverse up the
dirt slope traveling
south to get to the top
of the climb near the
trailhead. Then walk a
few hundred feet across
the flat desert to the
trailhead
(tDanteCanyons1).
