General Comments

Most of the Big East Fork of Sevenmile Creek is a mix of very short narrow sections and longer sections of was walking. The lower canyon just before the exit has pretty cool slot less than 500 feet long.

Lower portion of the canyon can hold sections of water that may be over waist deep but all can be avoided with effort.

The exit route goes up a ravine / rubble ramp just down canyon of a side canyon we called the Selfish Fork. The Selfish Fork is the large drainage that runs parallel to the Big East Fork and just to the north of Big East Fork. While doing the Big East Fork with Tracy Kwan, John Diener, Matt Williams, Mike Schasch and Heather McIlvenna we jokingly called this the Selfish Fork because while everyone was taking a break I decided to go around and try to drop into the lower portion of the canyon. No one else wanted to go and decided to relax while I was gone. I made it up and into the lower part of the Selfish Fork and found the bottom 150 feet to be all downclimable and kinda fun and deep feeling. They all called me selfish cause I went up by myself.

Driving Directions

To get to the Trailhead

Note:
There is a maze of roads on Ticaboo Mesa making it a good idea to study the map ahead of time and keep a close eye on the map as you drive.

From Hanksville, UT., drive south on highway 95 for 26 miles to the junction of highways 95 and 276.

From the junction, drive south on HWY-276 for 25.6 miles then turn left (east) onto BLM dirt-road 13400 between mile markers 25 and 26 (extTicaboo1).

About 1.5 miles from the highway is a junction (TicabooDP-01) of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13410 branches off to the south.  Continue east on BLM road 13400.  Note: If you were headed to the Smith Fork area you would turn south onto BLM road 13410.

About 2 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-02) of BLM roads, 13400 continues east and 13420 branches off to the south. Continue east on BLM road 13400.  Note: BLM road 13420 to the south goes out to Cane Spring Well about 1.25 miles south.

About 0.2 miles farther is short side road (TicabooDP-03) on the left (north) that goes to a camp area.
Stay right to continue on BLM road 13400.  Beyond this point the roads will have intermittent rough sections.
About 0.37 miles past here is a fork in the road where the two roads rejoin a short distance later.  The low road is typically the smoothest.

About 1.7 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-04) of BLM roads (13400 continues north-ish and 13430 branches off to the south).
Continue north on BLM road 13400.
Note: If you were going to the roads between Warm Springs Creek and Sevenmile Creek, you would turn south onto BLM road 13430.

About 0.3 miles farther is another junction (TicabooDP-05) of BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13440 branches off to the north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.
Note: BLM road 13440 to the south goes out to Colt Spring Well about 0.4 miles north.

About 0.5 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-06) of BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13450 branches off to the north).
Continue straight northeast on BLM road 13400.

About 0.9 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-07) of BLM roads (13400 continues northeast and 13430 branches off to the south).
Turn south onto BLM road 13430.
Note: If you were going to Tough, SF Ticaboo or Sleepytime Trio Canyons you would continue northeast on BLM road 13400.

About 700 feet farther is a fork in the road (extWarmSpring).  At this fork stay left to continue toward the East Branch of Seven Mile Creek.

About 0.4 miles farther is another fork in the road (ext7MileCkEB).  Veer right (more south) to continue toward the East Branch of 7 Mile Creek.

About 1.0 mile farther is a junction (7MileCkEBDP-01) where a side road joins in from the left.  Continue straight (south) past the side road.

About 0.5 miles farther is a jog in the road (7MileCkEBDP-02) near an old stock pond.  Turning left leads to a berm with a survey marker by a stock pond.  Veer right to continue south.

As you drive south from the stock pond, the road crosses over some shallow washes.  Park off to the side of the road by the wash that is 0.52 miles past the stock pond (pk7MileEast-1).  There is no obvious spot to park, just park off to the side of the road to allow traffic to pass while you are gone.  Alternately you can park at the other parking spot about 600 feet north of here where another minor drainage crosses the road and is another minor fork of Big East Fork.

To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod

No exit vehicle is needed.  This is done as a loop route.

Details

The Approach:
From either of the parking spots (pk7MileEast-1) or (pk7MileEast-2) walk southwest down the minor drainage you parked at for about 0.42 miles to the confluence of the two minor drainages.

About 0.42 miles from the road the two drainages converge (7mileBEF_01) continue southwest down from this confluence for about 300 feet to a drop in the wash (7mileBEF_02) about 15 feet. Easily bypassed on the LDC side.

About 0.22 miles farther is the top of the Big East Fork (y7mileBEF-Tp).

The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From the top of the Big East Fork of Sevenmile Creek (y7mileBEF-Tp) you can rappel about 45 feet into a deep but short slot anchoring about 10 feet back from a rock. A short distance after the rappel is a downclimb of about 10 feet then a walk of about 50 feet to where the slot opens up to big wide open wash again.

Alternatively this short slot and rappel can be bypassed by walking around on the RDC side about 600 feet then scramble your way back down to the canyon floor.  The bottom of the rubble pile to the canyon floor is an easy scramble down to the canyon (7mileBEF_03).

Almost 300 feet down canyon is a downclimb (7mileBEF_04) of about 12 feet that can optionally be bypassed on the RDC side. There are a couple more short downclimbs before reaching rap 2 about 200 feet down canyon.

Rap 2 (d7mileBEF_R2) is anchored from a rock protruding from the ground and drops about 30 feet under a boulder to a narrow slot.

A little over 200 feet farther is a drop (7mileBEF_05) that is easily bypassed on the RDC side. Canyon also widens out here.

About 700 feet farther is a downclimb (7mileBEF_06) of about 6 feet at the start of another very short narrow section then more wide open wash walking.

About 900 feet farther is a narrow slot about 80 feet long with a few easy downclimbs then the canyon opens to more easy wash walking. This short slot can be bypassed if it is full of mud by climbing up around on the RDC side but a decent climber will need to scramble up and toss a rope down for some.  From the bottom of the slot (7mileBEF_07) walk about 600 feet to rap 3.

Rap 3 (d7mileBEF_R3) is anchored from a small tree / large bush about 10 feet back and drops about 60 feet into a deepish slot. After rap 3 walk the semi-narrow slot about 150 feet to where the canyon widens again to wide wash to walk.  Continue in wide wash about 400 feet to rap 4.

Rap 4 (d7mileBEF_R4) can be anchored from a rock horn up on the RDC side and drops about 50 feet then its a short walk to where the canyon widens out again to more open wash walking. Optionally this rap can be bypassed walking the ledge on the RDC side about 160 feet then scrambling down a ramp that drops down in the up canyon direction back to the canyon floor.

After rap 4 is a mix of easy walking and sections of light galumphing with a couple short easy downclimbs. About 0.2 miles down canyon a deeper slot begins to form.

Shortly into the slot (7mileBEF_08) is a sloped downclimb of about 15 feet then walking down in a deep feeling slot a little more than shoulder width wide in the narrow spots with one more sloped downclimb. The deep slot continues for about 475 feet then opens up to wash walking again (7mileBEF_09).

About 175 feet down canyon will be Side canyon joins in from RDC (we called it the Selfish Fork) and there is a ravine / rubble ramp just down canyon of it. To exit the canyon scramble north up the ravine / rubble ramp.

If you want to see the remainder of the Big East Fork continue down canyon over one 10 foot drop over a boulder then a mix of walking and light galumphing for about 900 feet to the confluence with Seven Mile Creek. After going to the confluence come back up canyon to here to exit. Caution if you go to the confluence it is easy to walk past it and never notice and find your self walking down main Seven Mile Creek.

Note:
The last 150 feet of the Selfish Fork just above here is downclimbable down to here. For a fun side trip you can go part way up the exit route then drop into the Selfish Fork where it is a wide open wash then down climb through this section back down into the Big East Fork. This side trip adds a little extra fun to the Big East Fork if desired.

To Exit:
Scramble up the side ravine / rubble ramp running right up next to Selfish Fork. After about 200 feet the grade becomes more gentle and will be less rubble filled. About 200 feet farther you will be able to turn right and scramble up out of the cross joint you are in up onto rolling slick rock.

The Exit:
From side canyon, Selfish Fork (j7mileBEF-Ext) scramble up the side ravine / rubble ramp. After about 200 feet the grade becomes more gentle and will be less rubble filled. About 200 feet farther you will be able to turn right and scramble up out of the cross joint you are in up onto rolling slick rock.

When the cross joint is shallow enough (7mileBEF_10) to allow you to scramble to the right (northeast) up onto rolling slickrock.

About 140 feet farther is the top of a ridge (7mileBEF_11) you can walk down to get into the wide open wash of the Selfish Fork below. To continue on the exit route continue northeast along rolling slickrock roughly following what feels like the crest of the ridge.

About 650 feet farther the route tops out briefly (7mileBEF_12). Continue northeast down the other side and over to a prominent steep hill about 450 feet away.

When you get to the hill (7mileBEF_13) go part way up the steep hill to here then veer left (north) to work your way out around the steep upper portion. Walk about 200 feet to the left the circle around 200 feet again to get to the other side of the hill where you will see one more hill that you can walk straight up.

On the other side is a survey marker (7Mile-BM-01), continue northeast up the hill.

At the top out of a hill (7mileBEF_14) you now have a good view of the cliff side of the mesa about 700 feet away. Walk over to the cliff band and travel just to the right of it.

When you get to the base of the cliff band (7mileBEF_15) below the mesa top. Walk along the base of the cliff band to the right (southeast) for about 270 feet to the base of a rubble pile to scramble up to the mesa top.

From the bottom of a rubble pile (7mileBEF_16) scramble up to get up on the mesa top.

From the top of the rubble pile (7mileBEF_17) continue northeast back toward the road.

About 0.34 miles farther cross over the shallow drainage (7mileBEF_18) then continue northeast and up the dirt hill to the next level.
This shallow drainage is the top end of the Selfish Fork.

after getting up the small dirt hill (7mileBEF_19) continue northeast toward the road. As you continue you may notice a drainage forming on your right (southish) which is the top of Big East Fork. You can drop back into the drainage if desired and follow it up but travel may be easier staying high and walking the rolling desert to the car (pk7MileEast-1) about 0.75 miles to the northeast.

Rap 4 - Big East Fork Seven Mile Creek. Can be anchored from a rock horn up on the RDC side and drops about 50 feet then its a short walk to where the canyon widens out again to more open wash walking.
  14. 7mileBEF_08          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.65366   W -110.58400        Elev: NaN Feet

Side canyon joins in from RDC (we called it the Selfish Fork) and there is a ravine / rubble ramp just down canyon of it. To Exit: Scramble up the side ravine / rubble ramp. After about 200 feet the grade becomes more gentle and will be less rubble filled. About 200 feet farther you will be able to turn right and scramble up out of the cross joint you are in up onto rolling slick rock. Note: The last 150 feet of the Selfish Fork just above here is downclimbable down to here. For a fun side trip you can go part way up the exit route then drop into the Selfish Fork where it is a wide open wash then down climb through this section back down into the Big East Fork. This side trip adds a little extra fun to the Big East Fork if desired.
  17. y7MileBEF-Bt          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 37.65268   W -110.58832        Elev: 4,080 Feet
Bottom of the Big East Fork of Seven Mile Canyon where it drops into the main fork. If traveling up from below the confluence the Big East Fork is to the right (east) and is visually the larger looking of the two. If traveling down the Big East Fork to here the up canyon direction in the main Seven Mile Creek is small and easily goes un-noticed. About 140 feet up the Main Seven Mile Canyon from here is a chute to start an exit up out of the system to the west.

This side trip adds a little extra fun to the Big East Fork if desired.

1st of 2 spots you can park for doing the Big East Fork or Little East Fork of Seven Mile Creek. This spot is 0.52 miles after passing the stock pond and is where a minor drainage crosses the road. There is no defined parking spot and you will need to pull off the side of the road where you feel comfortable doing so. The drainage here is one of the minor forks of Big East Fork and you can walk southwest down it to go to Big East Fork. Alternately you can park at the other parking spot about 600 feet north of here where another minor drainage crosses the road and is another minor fork of Big East Fork. To do the Big East Fork park at either of the two spots and walk southwest down the minor drainage you parked at for about 0.42 miles to the confluence of the two minor drainages. To do the Little East Fork it is preferable to park here to start the route.
