Gear Used for Canyon

Rappelling and anchor gear, Ropes and or pull cords for rappels up to 110 feet and 40 feet of 1 inch webbing for sling placement.

Generally wetsuits will not be needed as there is just one spot for a possible swim. In very cold weather a wetsuit may be a good idea for that one swim. In moderate or warm weather the extra weight and effort of hauling and putting on a wet suit would not be worthwhile and with there being only the one swim you would likely stay cold longer after the swim as your wet suit stays wet.

General Comments

The upper portions of Foolin Around are fun easy canyon while the final narrow slot before the last rap becomes a little more challenging. The final slot has a skinny section where you will need to stem or back-to-feet over skinny slot too narrow to fit in. At times you will be 15 or 20 feet off the deck but movement is easy and risk is low as the canyon below just doesn't let you fit or fall in. After about 200 feet of stemming you can climb down to the canyon floor to travel in narrow canyon where you need to turn sideways in places. The lower portions of the final slot have the potential to have a long swim if filled with recent rains.

Small pack recommended to make travel in the skinny sections easier.

The A(B) water rating is due to there actually being a section where you might swim but in all but cold weather, a wet suit may not be needed.

The approach route described here travels about 1.39 miles along a soft sandy road that travels east across the tops of the canyons leading south down into Butler Wash. The road is sandy and is not recommended for vehicular travel but is easily walked in 30 to 40 minutes. Alternatively You could drive more dirt roads to an alternate entry from the north but the logistics and time consumed with shuttling vehicles makes it less attractive.

Playin Around Canyon.
About 0.3 miles down canyon of rap 2 is a short side canyon on the LDC (east) side called Playin Around. Playing Around is a short 1000 foot long side canyon that can be upclimbed or downclimbed. We upclimbed the canyon then walked sloped slickrock back into Foolin Around. Optionally you could walk up sloped slickrock to the top then descend. Playing Around can be a little strenuous on if upclimbed but well worth the fun. A silo part way up the canyon can be stemmed over by stemming up about 30 feet or walked under to a 20 foot upclimb. Other portions of Playin Around have galumphing and moderate challenging upclimbs. If you decide to do Playin Around allow about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Driving Directions

To get to the Trailhead

From the junction of highway 95 and highway 276 (about 25.5 miles south of Hanksville), drive north on highway 95 about 0.7 miles to a dirt road turn off (extCedarPntRd).  The dirt road is called Cedar Point Road on some maps and is known by some as Turkey Knob Road.  Cedar Point road is graded making it passable for passenger cars although heavy rains might change that from time to time.  Turn right (east) onto Cedar Point Road.

Drive east on the main Cedar Point Road passing a few small less traveled side roads.  About 3.9 miles from highway 95 is a junction known to some as “The Four Way” (extTheFourWay).

From “The Four Way”, continue north east on Cedar Point Road about 1.5 miles to a junction where another dirt road crosses (pkShenaniganTp).  There is a lot of space here to park your vehicle to start the route.

To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod

From the "The Four Way” mentioned in the drive to trailhead section (extTheFourWay), turn right (south) onto another dirt road (not as well maintained) and drive about 0.3 miles to a flat spot to park (pkNoKidding1).  If your vehicle is not able to get down this short road to get to the parking spot you can optionally park back at “The Four Way”.   If you have a high clearance vehicle, you can drive another 700 feet to another parking spot (pkNoKidding2).

Details

The Approach:
From where you parked to start the route (pkShenaniganTp), walk east an old sandy road.  The road starts out hard packed dirt and quickly becomes a deep soft sandy mess.  Best to walk this and not drive.

About 0.3 miles the road crosses a wide open wash (jMonkeyBAlt) which is the upper wash of Monkey Business.  To continue to Shenanigans or Foolin Around, continue east along the sandy road.

Another 0.4 miles farther the road crosses another major wash which is the top of Shenanigans.   Continue east on the sandy road

About 1,000 feet farther the road crosses another wash (Foolin01) which would also lead down to Shenanigans if followed. To continue to Foolin Around, continue east along the road.

About 0.3 miles farther the road crosses a small wash (Foolin02). To continue to Foolin Around, continue east along the road.

About 1,000 feet farther is a fork in the road (Foolin03). To go to Foolin Around, veer right following the more well traveled road down to the Foolin Around drainage.

About 400 feet farther the road drops into the Foolin Around drainage (jFooling). Turn right and follow south down the wash.

About 350 feet south down the wash go around a large cattle pond (Foolin04).

About 900 feet farther is the top of Foolin Around where a vertical drop forms (yFoolinTp).

The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From the top of Foolin Around (yFoolinTp), you can walk about 120 feet along the LDC (southeast) rim to scramble down into the canyon then route find down ledges as you work down canyon and toward the floor. Optionally you can can walk the RDC rim about 800 feet to another easy scramble down multiple levels to the canyon floor.

A little over 500 feet down canyon is the start of deep slot (Foolin06) where light galumphing begins, a few boulders to scramble over and one downclimb of about 10 feet before reaching rap 1.

Rap 1 (dFoolinR1) anchored from rocks and drops about 25 feet. The top of the rap can be downclimbed while the bottom half would be more difficult.

Continue down canyon in narrow slot with a mix of walking, easy galumphing a couple spots you may need to stem up about 8 feet over skinny sections and a few easy downclimbs of about 10 feet.

About 0.25 miles farther after a large open area, a narrow slot forms again (Foolin07) that is very narrow for about 200 feet before reaching some boulder debris to scramble over to get to the next rap.

Rap 2 (dFoolinR2) anchored from a cairn anchor and drops about 35 feet down narrow slot that is mostly downclimbable but best done on rope. To prevent rope pull issues, it is a good idea to extend the anchor webbing about 10 feet down into the slot and downclimb the first 10 feet to get on rappel. As you near the bottom of rap 2 you will need stem down canyon at an angle to get over a narrow spot where you can not fit.

Continue down canyon for about 0.35 miles with a mix of easy walking, light galumphing and some sections where you will need to take your pack off and turn sideways to walk.

About 0.35 miles down canyon is the bottom of Playin Around Canyon (yPlayinAroundBt) on the LDC (east) side where it dumps down into Foolin Around.

Note:
Playing Around is a short 1000 foot long side canyon that can be upclimbed or downclimbed. We upclimbed the canyon then walked sloped slickrock back into Foolin Around. Optionally you could walk up sloped slickrock to the top then descend. Playin Around can be strenuous if upclimbed but well worth the fun.

About 400 feet farther is a skinny and deep sloping slot (Foolin08) to bypass on the LDC side by scrambling down boulder debris on the LDC side close to the canyon wall.

Note:
If you play through the slot instead of bypassing it there are 3 drops of about 10, 35 and 50 feet and a minor pothole.

About 800 feet farther is the down canyon end (Foolin09) of a large open area just before starting down into more narrow slot. Continue down canyon with easy walking and galumphing and one drop of about 15 feet where you can stem down canyon about 20 feet then easily stem / downclimb to the canyon floor.

About 650 feet father the canyon widens briefly (Foolin10). Continue down canyon with mostly easy walking and a few spots narrow enough to turn sideways to pass through. Some portions are slanted to the left just enough to force you to lean into the left wall and make walking awkward.

About 1,000 feet farther is an open area where a side drainage comes in (Foolin11-EE) from the LDC (southeast) side just before the main canyon becomes deep and narrow. Continuing down canyon into the narrow section the canyon becomes more physically challenging than the upper section.

Note:
Optionally you can escape the canyon here on the LDC side and either go back to the top of the canyon or bypass the final narrow slot and walk back into canyon just above the final rappel. To go back to the head of the canyon, route find east up slickrock slopes to rolling desert above then walk rolling desert north back to the top of the canyon. To bypass the final narrow slot and walk back in just above the final rappel, route find east up slickrock slopes about 200 feet then travel west about 0.3 miles roughly following the rim of the slot and scramble down into the canyon on sloped slickrock.

About 250 feet into the narrow section the walls become too skinny for a person to fit (Foolin11) and you will need to stem down canyon sometimes about 15 to 20 feet off the deck. After about 150 feet of stemming is a silo on the RDC side where you can stem down to the canyon floor. Once on the canyon floor, travel is walking in narrow slot where you will need to turn sideways at times to walk. We had ankle deep water and mud but after rains this section could be a little deeper.

About 500 feet farther is the first (Foolin12) of 3 short downclimbs of 5, 8 then 8 feet. As you scramble down the downclimbs the canyon holds more water. After the third downclimb is a long swim between narrow walls. The swim for us was about 40 feet long but water line and mud infill suggests in some conditions the swim could be much longer.

Shortly after the canyon opens (Foolin13) to wide sandy vegetated section about 350 feet long to the final rappel.  About 450 feet down canyon is the next rap.

Rap 3 (dFoolinR3) anchored a large rock and drops about 110 feet down to wide open wash.

Note:
Gently sloped slickrock allows entry or exit from the canyon on the LDC side.

From the bottom of rap 3 is light boulder hoping and wash walking for about 0.6 miles to a 20 foot drop (Foolin14) in the wash that is bypassed using social trails on the LDC side for about 500 feet before dropping back to the wash.

A little over 1,000 feet farther is the bottom exit of Foollin Around (yFoolinArndBt) where it joins the exit routes of Shenanigans and Monkey Business.

The Exit:
From the bottom of Foolin Around where it joins Shenanigans and Monkey Business (yFoolinArndBt) continue down canyon about 0.3 miles to another smaller side canyon joining in from the right (west) and is the Kelsey Exit out of Butler Canyon after doing the Monkey Business, Shenanigans or Foolin Around routes (jKlsyExtShnany).  To exit out of Butler Canyon, turn right (west) and walk northwest up this side canyon.

About 400 feet up the canyon another canyon drops in from the right (north east) and is the bottom of the No Kidding route (yNoKiddingBt).  Pass by the bottom of No Kidding and continue up westi-sh up the wash.

About 450 feet farther the climb gets significantly steeper (wShnanyKelRP-1).  Continue up the steep section above by going up the wider ravine to the right and do not go up the this slot on the left.  Continuing up is a mix of scrambling up rock sections and trudging up steep loose dirt.

About 300 feet farther is a soft sandy section (KelsyButlr2) running along the left (south) side of the ravine and the ravine above looks like it begins to get a lot more difficult.  From the top of the sandy area, turn right (north) and cross over to a chute that provides a much easier climb up.  Scramble up the chute about 100 feet to find an easy traverse to the right (north) side of the ravine (KelsyButlr3).

At the easy traverse (KelsyButlr3), traverse right (north) and route find to a wide open slick rock area running north east along the base of a cliff face.  Walk north east about 275 feet on slick rock to a series of small potholes, cross over those small potholes and walk another 175 feet to a deeper drainage with deeper potholes which is the drainage for No Kidding.

Once on the rim of the No Kidding drainage (KelsyButlr4), turn left and scramble west up fairly steep for about 300 feet to a top out.

From the top out (KelsyButlr5) where the climb levels out, veer slight right (north west) and follow up the gently sloped ridge to dirt then walk an open dirt area about 400 feet to another short slick rock slope then scramble north up the slope.

From the top of the slickrock slope (KelsyButlr6) the exit vehicles can be seen across the open desert about 0.5 miles to the northwest.

Route find rolling desert northwest toward the exit vehicles parked on the dirt road (pkNoKidding).  There will be a few ups and downs in shallow gullies along the way.

Rap 2 - Foolin Around. Anchored from a cairn anchor and drops about 35 feet down narrow slot that is mostly downclimbable but best done on rope.

We upclimbed the canyon then walked sloped slickrock back into Foolin Around. Optionally you could walk up sloped slickrock to the top then descend. Playin Around can be strenuous if upclimbed but well worth the fun.
  8. Foolin08          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05221   W -110.48608        Elev: NaN Feet
Skinny and deep sloping slot to bypass on the LDC side by scrambling down boulder debris on the LDC side close to the canyon wall. Note: If you play through the slot instead of bypassing it there are 3 drops of about 10, 35 and 50 feet and a minor pothole.

Down canyon end of a large open area just before starting down into more narrow slot. Continue down canyon with easy walking and galumphing and one drop of about 15 feet where you can stem down canyon about 20 feet then easily stem / downclimb to the canyon floor.
  10. Foolin10          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05035   W -110.48967        Elev: NaN Feet
Canyon widens briefly here. Continue down canyon with mostly easy walking and a few spots narrow enough to turn sideways to pass through. Some portions are slanted to the left just enough to force you to lean into the left wall and make walking awkward.
  11. Foolin11-EE          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.04802   W -110.49167        Elev: 4,890 Feet
Open area where a side drainage comes in from the LDC (southeast) side just before the main canyon becomes deep and narrow. Continuing down canyon into the narrow section the canyon becomes more physically challenging than the upper section. Note: Optionally you can escape the canyon here on the LDC side and either go back to the top of the canyon or bypass the final narrow slot and walk back into canyon just above the final rappel.
  12. Foolin11          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.04703   W -110.49179        Elev: NaN Feet
About 250 feet into the narrow section the walls become too skinny for a person to fit and you will need to stem down canyon sometimes about 15 to 20 feet off the deck. After about 150 feet of stemming is a silo on the RDC side where you can stem down to the canyon floor. Once on the canyon floor, travel is walking in narrow slot where you will need to turn sideways at times to walk. We had ankle deep water and mud but after rains this section could be a little deeper.
  13. Foolin12          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.04658   W -110.49327        Elev: NaN Feet
First of 3 short downclimbs of 5, 8 then 8 feet. As you scramble down the downclimbs the canyon holds more water. After the third downclimb is a long swim between narrow walls. The swim for us was about 40 feet long but water line and mud infill suggests in some conditions the swim could be much longer.
  14. Foolin13          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.04604   W -110.49432        Elev: NaN Feet
Canyon opens to wide sandy vegetated section about 350 feet long to the final rappel.

  1. yPlayinAroundBt          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05301   W -110.48525        Elev: NaN Feet
Bottom of Playin Around Canyon on the LDC (east) side where it dumps down into Foolin Around. Note: Playing Around is a short 1000 foot long side canyon that can be upclimbed or downclimbed. We upclimbed the canyon then walked sloped slickrock back into Foolin Around. Optionally you could walk up sloped slickrock to the top then descend. Playin Around can be strenuous if upclimbed but well worth the fun.
  2. PlayinAround01          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05343   W -110.48356        Elev: NaN Feet
Approximate spot of a silo. Traveling up or down canyon, you can cross over the silo by stemming up about 30 feet. Optionally you can turn sideways and walk the canyoon floor under the silo but will have a 20 foot upclimb or downclimb (depending on direction of travel) on the up canyon end of the silo. Up cayon of the silo is galumphing and walking on farily level ground for about few hundred feet up to the start of a skinny crack to stem / galumph up.
  3. PlayinAround02          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05398   W -110.48279        Elev: NaN Feet
Crack to upclimb near a side bowl on the LDC (east) side. Upclimb the crack then one more drop to get to the head of the slot.
  4. yPlayinAroundTp          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05421   W -110.48257        Elev: 5,140 Feet
Top of Playin Around. If going down the canyon, soon will be a couple downclimbs before getting to a silo. If you climbed up the canyon, turn left go up sloped slickrock and route find over to a slickrock ridge about 400 feet west.
  5. PlayinAround03          Lat/Lon (WGS84):  N 38.05435   W -110.48405        Elev: NaN Feet
A high point in the slickrock ridge. If going to the top of Playing Around, walk east down sloped slickrock about 400 feet to the head of the slot. If going down from the top of Playing Around, route find southwest about 350 feet back down into Foolin Around.
