ATTENTION!!
Death Valley is considering a new permit system in response to the impact of the growing popularity of Canyoneering.
Lets continue to show the park just how respectful we can be to our environment.
Specific issues the park is concerned about:
1. Anchors: Bolting is Illegal in Death Valley National Park! Do Not Add Bolts. Natural anchor options are abundant.
Recent illegal bolts have popped up in Helios and Rainbow Canyons.
2. Poop: Dig a cathole at least 6 inches deep and 200 yards from any water source or campsite. Pack out all toilet paper.
3. Collecting fire wood is illegal, just don't do it!
Other basics:
Avoid walking in water when possible (Willow Canyon, etc).
Hike on durable surfaces and previously worn paths (avoid trampling vegetation or fragile soil crusts).
Pack out all trash including organic material (including seed shells, apple cores, orange peels, etc).
More info can be found here: http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/backcamp.htm
Lets keep this wonderful resource pristine so that we may continue to enjoy the canyons with limited regulations!
Charon Canyon is an enjoyable route with great views down to the
floor of Death Valley like other canyons in this area.
The approach up to Charon Canyon starts up from the alluvial fan of
Styx Canyon and follows the ridge on the south side of Styx. The
route up looks intimidating from the bottom but is not a difficult
to follow route. It is steep so you will work for it but route
finding is pretty easy after you start up. Finding the start up can
be a bit tricky since it all looks difficult looking at it from the
bottom.
From the drop in point near the head of Charon Canyon it has a
mostly narrow feel until rap 7. After rap 7 the canyon takes on a
more wide feel offering views down to the Death Valley floor in the
distance. At rap 12 the canyon begins to narrow up again until it
dumps you out on the alluvial fan. Each of these segments has its
own character.
To get to the Trailhead
From the junction of highways 178 (Bad Water Road) and 190,
drive south on highway 178 about 16.5 miles to Bad Water. From
Bad Water continue south on highway 178 another 5.0 miles.
There is no particular spot to park, just pull over to the side
of the road where it looks like it would be safe to leave your
vehicle (pkCharonBt). This spot is on the Badwater Road a
little north of the bottom exit of Charon Canyon.
To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod
No shuttle vehicle needed. This is done as a loop route.

The Approach:
From where you parked the vehicle (pkCharonBt) walk north along
Badwater Raod toward the alluvial fan for Styx Canyon. About 0.3
miles from the car, the road will start to turn left (northwest).
When the road starts to turn continue north off the road and across
the alluvial fan for Styx Canyon following along the bottom of the
mountain on the right (east).
Continue east along the base of the mountain for about 0.5 miles
after leaving the car. About 400 feet before reaching the mouth of
Styx Canyon is where you will turn to start up the mountain side
(wCharonRP-01).
The spot where you start up out of the alluvial and begin to climb
the side of the mountain is not obvious. Every bit of this section
looks intimidating and appears to be a bad idea as you look up from
the bottom. Contrary to how it looks from the bottom, the route up
is surprisingly straight forward and easy to follow. However the
route up is very steep so be prepared to work for it.
Since the start up spot is not obvious, a better description other
than 400 feet from the mouth of Styx is in order. Walking over to
the start up spot you will likely pass it and walk all the way over
to the mouth of Styx. When you discover you have went too far, walk
back south along the mountain side. About 300 feet from the mouth
of Styx look for vertical sections along the base of the mountain
that look like vertical dirt walls about 20 feet high or so. At the
southern end of these (about 400 feet from the mouth of Styx) will
be a shallow, almost un-noticed gully running down the side of the
mountain. The gully is very shallow and will not stand out unless
you are looking for it. Your route up will begin by starting up
into the gully.
As you start up the from the alluvial fan travel seems to be a bit
easier slightly right (south) of the shallow gully you started up.
As you get a little higher you will start to notice a wall on your
left (north). The top of that wall is the crest of the ridge
running up along the south side of Styx Canyon which you will soon
be following.
About 0.2 miles up from the alluvial fan, the wall
on your left will start to taper off allowing you more of a view to
the north. As this wall tapers off work left (north) and get up
onto the crest of the ridge (wCharonRP-02).
Continue eastish along
the crest of the ridge with Styx Canyon on the left (north). About
700 more feet up the ridge will be a section where travel involves
scrambling rather than steep walking. You will need to use your
hands and scramble up and over sections of rock. About 100 feet
along this section you will cross over a short knife edge feature
(wCharonRP-03) with a good view down to the floor of Styx Canyon on
your left (north). After the knife edge is about 100 more feet of
scrambling up along rock features before being able to walk again.
About 0.25 miles up from the knife edge the route levels off for a
short distance and provides a break from the steep climb
(wCharonRP-04). From here you can see the color of the ridge
further up is reddish in color.
About 0.25 more miles up the ridge
is where it turns from the standard dirt color you have been on to a
reddish color (wCharonRP-05). As it turns red the ridge begins to
get a little steeper again.
About 750 feet after stating up the
reddish portion of the ridge will be the top of a point along the
ridge (wCharonRP-06). From this point the ridge turns from reddish
to a mix of red and black. From here you start to get a good view
of the top of Charon Canyon.
About another 1000 feet is a saddle to cross over along the ridge
(wCharonRP-07). There has been a pretty easy to follow trial for
this last part up the ridge. As you cross over this saddle the
trail fades away. There are steep drainages dropping off into
Charon here. Rather than drop into one of these continue across the
saddle and continue up the ridge.
After crossing over the saddle
you will need to go up the other side to continue up the ridge.
Getting up the other side of the saddle involves a little
scrambling.
About 500 feet after leaving the saddle, you will
scramble up and get a good view down to the drop in point for Charon
Canyon. Look for a smooth gentle sloped wash leading down to all
the rugged portions of Charon you have been seeing. The goal is to
drop down into the smooth wash just at the top of the rugged portion
of the canyon.
Keep your eye out for a large cairn marking the top
of a ramp leading down to the wash at the head of Charon
(wCharonRP-08). If you miss the cairn just find a way to climb down
into the gentle wash below. If you find the cairn (which will be
below you so look down to look for it) walk over to it to find a
gently sloped ramp leading down.
When you make it down to the wash
at the top of the rugged portion you are at the drop in point marked
as the head of Charon Canyon (yCharonTp). This is not the actual
head of Charon. The actual head is about 0.4 miles east with little
to offer for excitement except some walking in an open wash.
The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
From the drop in point (elevation of approximately 2900 feet) at the
head of Charon Canyon (yCharonTp) drop down a series of 3 down
climbs then a short walk and a couple more down climbs before
reaching rap 1. A couple of the down climbs may require partner
assists depending on the skill level of the group. The last down
climb of two 8 foot stages will drop you right to the top of rap 1.
Rap 1 (dCharonR1-2) is about 250 feet down canyon of the drop in.
Rap 1 is anchored RDC from a pinch point between boulders about 15
feet back from the rap and above head height. You will need to
climb up and around RDC to get up to the anchor. Rap 1 drops about
40 feet down a vertical wall.
At the bottom of rap 1 is a narrow section with a down climb of 8 to
10 feet that some will want assistance with.
Rap 2 (dCharonR2) is about 100 down canyon of rap 1. Rap 2 is
anchored from a rock horn LDC at the top of the drop and drops about
80 feet down a vertical wall with a fair amount of loose rock. At
the bottom of rap 2 the canyon walls are wider apart again.
Rap 3 (dCharonR3) is about 150 feet down canyon of rap 2. Rap 3 is
anchored from a cairn style anchor and drops a total of about 95
feet over 2 stages. It feels like a natural place to get off rappel
at the bottom of stage 1. Keep in mind you need to drop down 2
stages. If you do pull your ropes after getting off at the bottom
of stage 1 you can down climb up and over LDC to bypass the second
stage. The down climb is pretty simple and almost stair like.
However it looks worse than it is and the exposure will make most
people decide to just rap on over the second stage.
At the bottom of rap 3 is a couple of down climbs of about 8 feet
each then an easy walk down to rap 4.
Rap 4 (dCharonR4) is a little over 200 feet down canyon of rap 3
with a couple easy down climbs and some easy wash walking between.
Rap 4 is anchored from a cairn anchor about 25 feet back from the
top of the drop and drops down a slightly sloped wall about 20
feet. Rap 4 can be down climbed by skilled down climbers by staying
LDC where it is more featured. Take care not to twist the ropes on
rap 4 or there may be difficulty on the rope pull since the anchor
is so far back.
Down canyon of rap 4 is a long section of wash walking intermixed
with some quick easy down climbs.
Rap 5 (dCharonR5) is about 0.25 miles down canyon of rap 4. Rap 5
is anchored from a rock horn LDC and drops about 65 feet down a
vertical wall with lots of loose rock.
About 80 feet down canyon of rap 5 is a down climb of about 10 feet
over a couple boulders. If some in your group wish to rap the drop
they can be provided a meat anchor or use a rock embedded in the
wash about 20 feet back as a temporary anchor. The stronger down
climbers can provide the meat anchor and climb down last. The drop
best route down is RDC in a small crack between the canyon wall and
the first boulder.
After another short down climb and a short walk down canyon leads to
the top of rap 6.
Rap 6 (dCharonR6) is about 150 feet down canyon of rap 5. Rap 6 is
anchored LDC from a rock embedded in the wash about 30 feet back
from the top of the drop. Rap 6 drops about 20 feet.
After rap 6 is a short easy wash walk of about xx feet to a few
short easy down climbs to the top of a large drop in a narrow
section of the canyon. When down climbing down to this big drop
take care to look at what you are stepping on. As you approach the
drop you may start to notice you are walking on a false floor
created from fallen rock wedged between the canyon walls.
Rap 7 (dCharonR7) is about 100 feet down canyon of rap 6. The top
of rap 7 is a false floor so be careful what you are stepping on.
Down climb over and around a few boulders, to get to the top of the
drop. Rap 7 is anchored from a large rock about 10 feet back from
the drop and drops about 100 feet. Rap 7 is an incredible view
looking down with your feet on the wall most if not all of the way
down, but because of the geometry of it you feel like it may be a
big free hanging rap. While on rap 7 and when at the bottom take a
moment to look up at the false floor you were standing on moments
earlier. It is a little eerie to think about. If providing a belay
from the bottom, try to stay tucked way off to the LDC side to stay
out of the way of falling rock that will be knocked loose.
Rap 7 is at an elevation of approximately 2080 feet.
Note:
Rap 7 drops almost exactly 100 feet. If you are using a single 200
foot rope it is a good idea to send the first person down with more
than enough rope then equalize the rope while the person below
communicates what is needed. If your ropes are a little short or a
lot of gravel gets washed out at the bottom of the rap you may need
to use a second rope here. Keep rope stretch in mind when judging
this rap.
Down canyon of rap 7 is a long wide open wash walk with a multiple
easy scrambling down climbs along the way. The canyon keeps its
more wide feel for quite a ways down canyon over the next few
rappels.
About 650 feet down canyon of rap 7 is a debris field of
huge boulders (wCharonRP-09) fallen in the wash. You will need to
down climb over and around some of these. Part way through the
boulder field you will come to a drop that looks like it needs to be
rappelled. When you get to this drop, scramble up and over way over
toward the LDC side of the canyon to find a couple easier ways to
get down.
After the boulder field continue down the wash about
750 more feet to the top of rap 8.
Rap 8 (dCharonR8) is anchored
LDC from a large rock up on a ledge about 12 feet up. The rock is
on a sloped section of the ledge and looks like repelling on it will
pull it right over the drop with you. However the rock is quite
large and is not going to move at all. Rap 8 drops about 40 feet
down a slightly slopped wall.
Rap 9 (dCharonR9) is about 200 feet
down canyon of rap 8 with easy wash walking and a few easy
scrambling down climbs between. Anchored from a rock horn and drops
about 35 feet.
A little over 100 feet down canyon of rap 9 are
some drops in the wash that are easily bypassed by traversing along
the sloped LDC side of the canyon. Traverse about 150 feet down
canyon and scramble down to the top of rap 10.
Rap 10 (dCharonR10)
is about 250 down canyon of rap 9. Rap is anchored from a cairn
anchor about 15 feet back from the drop and drops about 115 feet
down a rough vertical wall and a couple short sections of free
hang. From the top of Rap 10 there are great views of the wide open
spaces of Death Valley out in the distance.
Down canyon of rap 10
is more easy wash walking with a few easy scrambling down climbs.
Rap 11 (dCharonR11) is about 650 feet down canyon of rap 10. Rap 11
is anchored from one of many rocks in the wash RDC at the top of the
drop. Rap 11 drops about 85 feet and has a lot of jagged rock near
the top. Pay close attention to the fall line while on Rap 11. Try
to follow gravity down and not your natural urge to follow the
contours of the rock. Following gravity straight down here will
keep you from dragging your rope across the jagged stuff at the top
of the rap ad damaging the rope.
Down canyon of rap 11 is a short
wash walk then a long series of easy down climbs one right after the
other for about 500 feet. The down climbs are all easy but are
continuous as you drop down through a boulder field. After the 500
feet of easy down climbs you are again greeted with some easy wash
walking for about 600 feet with a few easy scrambling down climbs
mixed in.
Just before reaching rap 12 you will find a series of 4
short pour offs of about 8 or 10 feet each leading down to rap 12.
These pour offs are in a more grey colored rock and are where the
canyon begins to get narrow again.
Rap 12 (dCharonR12) is about
0.2 miles down canyon of rap 11. Rap 12 is anchored from a cairn
style anchor and drops about 100 feet. The start of Rap 12 is down
a gentle slope which quickly rolls off to go vertical. From the top
rap 12 looks like it might be higher than 100 feet as it drops down
into a narrow section of the canyon. Stay clear when waiting at the
bottom of rap 12. There are sections of the wall that look solid
but break off rather easily when a rappeller kicks them.
Down
canyon of rap 12 are a couple easy down climbs before reaching rap
13.
Rap 13 (dCharonR13-14) is a little over 200 feet down canyon
of rap 12. Rap 13 is anchored from a cairn anchor and drops about
145 feet over 3 stages of pour offs.
Rap 14 is about 50 feet down
canyon of rap 13. Rap 14 is anchored RDC from a cairn anchor and
drops about 50 feet.
Just after rap 14 is a down climb of about 12
feet which most will want some assistance with. Taller people will
have an easier time reaching the sides on this down climb.
Next is
a long section of easy wash walking with some easy down climbs of 4
to 6 feet each. As you walk this section of the canyon you start to
get the impression you are almost ready to see it widen out onto the
alluvial fan. Hold on you still have a little more to go before you
get spit out by Charon.
Rap 15 (dCharonR15) is about 0.2 miles
down canyon of rap 14. Rap 15 is anchored RDC from an arch about 15
feet back from the drop that you will need to scramble up to get to
it. Rap 15 drops about 40 feet.
Rap 16 (dCharonR16) is about 100
feet down canyon of rap 15. Rap 16 is anchored from a cairn anchor
and drops about 40 feet over 2 stages.
Just after rap 16 are a
couple of down climbs of about 6 to 8 feet each. After the 2 down
climbs is a third down climb that may be a bit difficult for some
people. This third down climb is about 8 to 10 feet and starts down
a tight spot where you will likely need to take a pack off. After
the third down climb is a short walk to the top of rap 17.
Rap 17
(dCharonR17) is about 80 feet down canyon of rap 16. Anchored LDC
from one of the boulders in a pile of rock debris. Rap 17 drops
about 30 feet over the boulders to the wash below.
About 150 feet
after rap 17 with an 8 foot easy down climb along the way, Charon
will end and open up onto the alluvial fan (yCharonBt). The canyon
opens up to the alluvial fan at an elevation of about 120 feet below
sea level.
The Exit:
When the canyon ends at the alluvial fan (yCharonBt) walk north west
across the alluvial fan toward Bad Water Road. The car will be
parked about 0.3 miles from the mouth of the canyon (pkCharonBt).
