General Comments

ATTENTION!!
Death Valley is considering a new permit system in response to the impact of the growing popularity of Canyoneering.
Lets continue to show the park just how respectful we can be to our environment.

Specific issues the park is concerned about:
1. Anchors: Bolting is Illegal in Death Valley National Park! Do Not Add Bolts. Natural anchor options are abundant.
Recent illegal bolts have popped up in Helios and Rainbow Canyons.
2. Poop: Dig a cathole at least 6 inches deep and 200 yards from any water source or campsite. Pack out all toilet paper.
3. Collecting fire wood is illegal, just don't do it!

Other basics:
Avoid walking in water when possible (Willow Canyon, etc). Hike on durable surfaces and previously worn paths (avoid trampling vegetation or fragile soil crusts). Pack out all trash including organic material (including seed shells, apple cores, orange peels, etc). More info can be found here: http://www.nps.gov/deva/planyourvisit/backcamp.htm

The North Fork of Cerberus offers another version of the canyon.  The North and South Forks are similar so one is not recommended over the other.

Cerberus Canyon will give you lots of practice setting up rappel after rappel.  The rappels (29 in South Fork or 27 in North Fork) on this route are squeezed in about 2 miles.  Two of the rappels are about 270 feet so be prepared for that.  None of the down climbs are difficult enough to make special note of, but there are quite a few of them.  Be sure to allow ample time to complete the canyon.  This will take most of your daylight hours.  It would be nice to do this canyon midsummer while the days are longer, but the temperatures in DV prevent this.

Driving Directions

To get to the Trailhead

From the junction of highways 178 (Bad Water Road) and 190, drive east on highway 190 about 10.7 miles to the turn off for Dantes View.  Follow the signs to Dantes View driving 12.5 miles on paved road until you come to a set of bathrooms on the left (southwest) side of the road (tDanteVarCyns).   

These bathrooms sit all by themselves and make a good landmark for the trailhead.  Park your vehicle anywhere off the road.  Note you are only 0.5 miles from Dantes View.  If your trip is planned with a little extra time it is worth the view to make a quick drive up to look over the Death Valley area from this high up.

To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod

Parking an exit vehicle is necessary.  From the junction of highways 178 (Bad Water Road) and 190, drive south on highway 178 about 16.5 miles to the Bad Water parking lot.  From Bad Water continue 3.2 miles south on highway 178.  There is no particular spot to park, just pull over to the side of the road where it looks like it would be safe near the center of the alluvial fan.

Details

The Approach:
From the trailhead (tDanteVarCyns), leave the pavement and travel almost due west (bearing of 262°) about 0.2 miles to an obvious low saddle (jCerberusTops).   

From the saddle (jCerberusTops), follow south along the ridge about 0.1 miles to the top of a peak (jCerbSF-StyxNF).

Note:
From this peak you can veer left (southeast) to go to the North Fork of Styx Canyon.

Continue over the peak down a ridge to the SSW (212 degrees).  Along this ridge are great views of the valley floor and portions of Cerberus.  About 350 feet down the ridge is another smaller peak composed of reddish rock (wCerb-SF-RP-01).  Skirt around the left (east) side of this small reddish peak and continue down the white ridge.   

About 0.3 miles from the reddish peak will be a saddle along the ridge.  From the low point of the saddle (wCerb-SF-RP-02), turn left (north west) and head back NW (45 degrees) and work down into the drainage leading down toward the Right Fork of Cerberus.   

About 500 feet from the saddle, you should be down in the drainage (wCerb-SF-RP-03)  This drainage will lead down to the Right Fork of Cerberus Canyon (yCerberusTp).  

Travel south down the drainage with a couple of easy down climbs along the way.  A little over 0.3 miles down the drainage you will be in the Right Fork of Cerberus (yCerberusTp). 

The Canyon / Technical Section:
Once in the Right Fork of Cerberus Canyon (yCerberusTp), continue down canyon to the south west.  

As you continue down the main wash the canyon begins to narrow a bit and the walls start taking on a more reddish brown color with some vegetation on them.  It looks like you are entering a chocolate zone.  

Rap 1 (dCerb-SF-R1-2) is about 0.5 miles after entering the Right Fork of Cerberus.  Rap 1 is anchored from a small cairn anchor and drops about 25 feet down a vertical wall.   

Rap 2 is about 50 feet past rap 1.  Rap 2 is anchored from a rock horn about 12 feet overhead LDC and drops about 45 feet down a vertical wall.  

Rap 3 (dCerb-SF-R3) is about 100 feet past rap 2.  Rap 3 is anchored from large rock protruding from the ground and drops about 45 feet down a vertical wall.

Shortly before getting to rap 4 is a rock fall debris area.

Rap 4 (dCerb-SF-R4) is a little over 200 feet after rap 3.  Rap 4 is anchored from another rock protruding from the ground and drops about 160 feet down a vertical wall.  From the top of Rap 4 is a nice view down canyon with the valley floor in the background.

From the bottom of rap 4 travel is along a nice flat wash with the exception of one down climb about 10 feet high.  The walls are high giving that great narrow feeling to the canyon.   

Rap 5 (dCerb-SF-R5) is about 600 feet down canyon of rap 4.  To get to Rap 5 down climb to it about 10 feet LDC.  Rap 5 is anchored from a small cairn style anchor and drops about 90 feet from a ledge.  Rap 5 has a little bit of an awkward start which drops about 8 feet to a ledge then continues down a vertical wall.  The awkward start is due to the anchor webbing being set long for an easier rope pull.  

Rap 6 (dCerb-SF-R6) is about 100 feet down canyon of rap 5.  Rap 6 is anchored from a large rock protruding from the ground and rock piled on to keep the rope from riding up over it.  Rap 6 is a 2 stage rap.  The first stage drops about 35 feet flowed by a 50 foot horizontal section then another drop of about 20 feet.  About 150 foot of rope will be used for this rappel.

Note:
If you have a good down climber in the group the second stage of rap 6 can be down climbed.  This can speed things up by making rap 6 a single stage short rap.  Then have the good down climber belay the group down the second drop and down climb last.

Rap 7 (dCerb-SF-R7) is about 300 feet down canyon of rap 6.  Rap 7 is anchored from a small cairn and drops about 70 feet over two stages.  The first stage is about 10 feet to a short horizontal section then down another 55 feet along a slightly sloped wall (the last 15 feet being vertical).

Below rap 7 are a couple easy down climbs (one about 15 feet, the other about 5 feet) before reaching  

Rap 8 (dCerb-SF-R8) is about 200 feet down canyon of rap 7.  Rap 8 is anchored from a boulder LDC.  Rap 8 drops an even 100 feet along a mostly vertical fiery red wall.

The confluence of the right and left forks of Cerberus join about 90 feet down canyon of rap 8 (jCerberusNF-SF).

Rap 9 (dCerbMn-R9) is about 0.2 miles down canyon of the confluence with easy travel in a wider section of the canyon along the way.  Rap 9 is anchored from a small boulder LDC and drops about 35 feet down a water carved slot.

Rap 10 (dCerbMn-R10-11) is about 200 feet down canyon of rap 9.  Rap 10 is anchored from a small boulder RDC and drops about 25 feet.  The start of rap 10 is along a small smooth trough carved from water.  The trough ends abruptly as if cut off by something then the rap goes vertical with a slight overhang as it goes past the trough.

Rap 11 is near the bottom of rap 10 and can be seen from the top of rap 10.  Rap 11 is anchored from small boulder RDC and drops a total of about 50 feet.  The anchor is set back about 20 feet for a total rope distance of 70 feet.  Rap 11 starts down an easy slope before dropping over a ledge.  Just over the ledge is an overhanging section of the rap and care should be taken going over.   After rap 11 is a short section of scrambling then 0.3 mile of easy walking along the wash to rap 12.

Rap 12 (dCerbMn-R12) is about 0.3 miles down canyon of rap 11.  Rap 12 is anchored from a small boulder lodged against the wall LDC.  The rap drops about 15 feet along a couple boulders.  This is not a smooth wall but very easy to navigate.

There are a couple short down climbs between rap 12 and 13.

Rap 13 (dCerbMn-R13-14) is about 300 feet down canyon of rap 12.  In those 300 feet are several down climbs, ranging from 8 to 20 feet.  

Rap 13 is anchored from a small cairn anchor.  Rap 13 starts down a series of ledges with an easy overall slope then drops off a lot steeper as it drops.  Rap 13 drops over a series of a few stages some of which could be down climbed.  The total rope travel is about 140 feet.

Rap 14 is right at the bottom of rap 13.  Rap 14 is anchored from a rock horn at the top of the rap and drops down a large crack a little over 50 feet.  The start looks like it would be awkward but is pretty comfortable.

Note:
Rap 14 can be down climbed but is not recommended for everyone.  To down climb, climb up about 12 feet on the RDC side to get to the top of a ramp.  Carefully scramble down the ramp and around a corner where you can get into the top of the crack where the rappel is.  once in the crack the down climb is only moderately difficult but has a lot of loose rock to be aware of.

Rap 15 (dCerbMn-R15) is about 500 feet down canyon of rap 14 with a couple easy down climbs along the way.  The anchor for Rap 15 is a choke stone tucked under a large boulder near the top of the rap.  Rap 15 drops about 25 feet between a large boulder and the canyon wall.  This rappel might be considered a down climb for some.

Below rap 15 is a 0.4 mile long section of narrow wash with a few easy down climbs along the way before reaching Rap 16.

Rap 16 (dCerbMn-R16) is anchored from a rock protruding from the ground about 10 feet back.  Rap 16 is a 2 stage rap with the first part being about 15 feet down a sloped wall then over a large boulder down another 25 feet.  The last part of the rap has about a 9 foot over hang.

Just after rap 16 the canyon turns and drops to the right.  The drop at this turn (wCerbMainRP-01) is bypassed by climbing up and over LDC.  Walk up the slope on the left side of the canyon then either continue high on the side of the canyon for a ways or drop down as soon as you can.  Either route will get you back to the canyon floor bypassing the drop.

Rap 17 is about 0.2 miles down canyon of rap 16.  The stretch between is easy wash walking with several easy down climbs along the way.   

Rap 17 (dCerbMn-R17-18) is anchored from a pinch point between boulders back a bout 20 feet from the drop and drops 50 feet down the wall next to a large boulder in the wash.  You will need about 70 feet of rope travel for this rappel.

Rap 18 is just below rap 17 and is anchored by a double cairn anchor.  Rap 18 drops 115 feet down a fluted wall with a ledge about 1/3 down.  The wall looks good from the bottom but even better while on the rap.  Take time to enjoy this one a little.

Rap 19 (dCerbMn-R19-20) is about 400 feet down canyon from rap 18 with and easy walk down the wash between.  The top of Rap 19 is pretty open and allows a great view of the valley floor in the distance.  Rap 19 is anchored from a cairn style anchor at the top of the rap.  Rap 19 starts down a smooth water carved slot in pink rock.  Shortly after, it drops off down a vertical wall of very rough dark red rock with about 40 feet of it being overhung.  The total drop is about 160 feet.  

At the bottom of rap 19 is another drop RDC which is bypassed by climbing around LDC.  When climbing around this drop stay high for a short distance on the climb around and resist the urge to drop down too soon.  Hug the wall and follow it around to a down climb with less exposure and more hand holds.

Rap 20 is just after the down climb at the bottom of rap 19.  After climbing down to the wash below, look for a rock protruding from the ground RDC.  The rock is the anchor for Rap 20.  It is easy to overlook the rock since you can down climb passed it easily.  If you miss it, go down canyon to the next major drop, turn around and walk back up canyon about 40 feet and up on a ledge about 5 foot high.  Near the top of this ledge is the rock for the anchor.  

Rap 20 drops only about 35 feet down a sloped wall, but needs more rope since the anchor is about 40 feet up canyon.  

Rap 21 (dCerbMn-R21) is about 80 feet down canyon of rap 20.  Rap 21 is the First Big Rap in the canyon.  Now is the time to break out the big rope.  Rap 21 is anchored from a pile of rocks just behind a protruding rock at the top of the rappel.   Rap 21 is three stages and drops a total of about 270 feet.  First stage is about 30 feet then a second stage of about 30 feet then a third stage of about 210.  The first two stages are in a narrow chute like section and the final stage is down a vertical wall with a lot of loos rock.  The total drop for Rap 21 is about 270 feet.  The lower portion of Rap 21 is down a vertical wall of rough red rock.

Down canyon of rap 21 are a couple easy down climbs over about 400 before getting to rap 22.  

Rap 22 (dCerbMn-22) is anchored from a boulder near the top of the rap and drops down between a large boulder and the canyon wall RDC.  There is an awkward overhang near the top of Rap 22 and care should be taken here.  The total drop is about 35 feet.  

Rap 23 (dCerbMn-R23-24) is about 300 feet down canyon of rap 22.  There is a short down climb RDC to get to Rap 23.  Rap 23 is anchored from a large rock laying in the wash about 15 feet up canyon from the rap.  Rap 23 drops about 45 feet down a fairly smooth water carved flute.  This is another fun rap although very short.

Rap 24 is a few feet from the bottom of rap 23.  Rap 24 is anchored from a choke stone under a boulder about 30 feet up canyon of the drop.  Rap 24 drops about 20 feet down a vertical wall. 

Note:
Better down climber may enjoy down climbing this and providing a top belay for others.

Below rap 24, the canyon feels a bit wide open again for a short distance.  

Rap 25 (dCerbMn-R25) is about 200 feet down canyon of rap 24.  Rap 25 is anchored from a large rock protruding from the ground and drops about 100 feet over 2 stages of about equal height.

After rap 25 are a few down climbs along the way down canyon.  One of the down climbs had anchor material.  The anchor was not needed since it is a very easy down climb LDC. 

About 450 feet down canyon are some fluted drops as you make a right turn (wCerbMainRP-02).  These are quickly bypassed by going up and over then along the ledges on the LDC side.  About 200 feet farther down canyon is the top of rap 26.

Rap 26 (dCerbMn-R26) is about 800 feet down canyon of rap 25 and is the Second Big Rap.  The top of Rap 26 is wide open and allows a very wide view down do the valley floor in the distance.  It is possible to see the exit vehicle you parked, if you look close.  This view gives a very good impression of just how big the alluvial fan for Cerberus is.

Rap 26 (dCerberusR26) is anchored from a rock at the top of the rap.  Rap 26 starts out with a slight sloped flute of about 50 feet to a ledge.  This helps with setting up the rope for the rap from part way down and the ledge is a good place to readjust the friction on your device if needed.  The second part of rap 26 drops off vertical.  The total drop is about 270 feet.  The vertical portion of Rap 26 is down a rough wall and has a about 50 foot of overhang near the bottom.

Note:
It appears rap 26 is not in what used to be the main water course.  Rap 26 feels like it emerges from a hanging valley like area but travel down canyon to it feels like you are in the main water course.  Just an odd note to look at if this kind of thing interests you.

About 500 feet down canyon of rap 26 is a 15 foot down climb in a water chute (wCerbMainRP-03).  Some can down climb this while others will want to rappel.  To rappel this drop wrap the rope around a rock at the top.  Just beyond the down climb is rap 27.  

Rap 27 (dCerbMn-R27-28) is a little over 100 feet after the drop.  Rap 27 is anchored from a rock protruding from the ground but has a slight angle on the up canyon side.  Another rock is placed on the anchor webbing to keep it from sliding off the rock.  Rap 27 drops about 40 feet down a water carved chute in some polished pink and gray rock.   The anchor is about 40 feet up canyon of the rappel.

Rap 28 is a few feet from the bottom of rap 27.  Rap 28 is anchored from a cairn about 15 feet up canyon from the rap.  Rap 28 drops about 100 feet down a fairly smooth vertical wall.   

Just after rap 28 is a short down climb before continuing down canyon.  

Rap 29 (dCerbMn-R29) is about 400 feet down canyon of rap 28 and is the final rap.  Rap 29 is anchored from large rock on the wash floor and drops 70 feet over 2 stages down a choppy wall.  

About 100 feet after rap 29 the canyon opens up to the humongous alluvial fan for Cerberus Canyon.  This is the end of the technical portion of the route (yCerberusBt).

The Exit:
From the exit (yCerberusBt) walk about 0.5 mile walk west to the exit vehicle parked along the side of the road (PkCerberusBt).
