General Comments

Selfish Fork offers little in the way of technical fun but makes for mellow day as a hike with ropes kind of outing. Not recommended as a destination canyon. Actually its not really recommended at all. Just something to do if bored.

If the canyon has had recent rain there could be a couple spots that would have waist deep water. The biggest issue with water here would be the slick mud created from the slick clay like dirt.

A GPS or decent map reading is needed to be sure you do not drop into the wrong fork. The Selfish fork drops into the Big East Fork right next to the Big East Fork exit rubble filled ravine. The exit follows the Big East Fork exit back to the cars.

While doing the Big East Fork with Tracy Kwan, John Diener, Matt Williams, Mike Schasch and Heather McIlvenna we jokingly called this the Selfish Fork. While everyone was taking a break I decided to go around and try to drop into the lower portion of the canyon because it got my curiosity going. No one else wanted to go and wanted a relaxed lunch break instead. I climbed out of Big East Fork and made it up and into the lower part of the Selfish Fork and found the bottom 150 feet to be all downclimable. The lower section was kinda fun and deep feeling but very short. They all called me selfish cause I went up all by myself. The section of canyon I could see above here was open but I wanted to see the whole thing ..... some day. Well 3 years Latter Matt and I were up for a weekend of lazy hiking with ropes to see a new spot and I finally got to see the rest of the Selfish Fork.

Driving Directions

To get to the Trailhead

Note:
There are a lot of roads in the Ticaboo Mesa area.  It is difficult to make driving directions simple so a good look at a map is recommended before driving out there the first time.

The parking spot for Good Day Jim is about 9.8 miles from the high way on dirt roads.

The junction of highways 95 and 276 is about 26 miles south on highway 95 from Hanksville Utah.

From the junction of highways 95 and 276, drive south on highway 276 for 25.6 miles to the turn off for a dirt road on the left (east) side of the road (extTicaboo1).  This exit is between mile markers 25 and 26.  Turn left (east) onto the dirt road and drive east.

About 1.5 miles down the dirt road is a junction (TicabooDP-01) to a side road on the right going south.  Continue past the junction driving east on the dirt road.

About 2 miles farther will be another road junction (TicabooDP-02) for a faint side road on the right going south.  Continue past the junction driving east on the dirt road.

About 0.3 miles farther is a road junction (TicabooDP-03) to a side road on the left.  Continue past the side road.

Just after this side road is a fork in the road.  The forks rejoin after a few hundred feet so you can use which ever you like.  Going right on the drive in seems to be the smoothest road.

The major drainage the road crosses just after the fork is part of the upper portion of Smith Fork.

About 1.7 miles farther will be a junction (TicabooDP-04) to a side road on the right running south.  This road junction is close to Wild Horse Spring.  Continue past this junction and drive north east.

About 0.3 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-05) for a side road on the left going north.  Continue past this junction driving north east.

About 0.5 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-06) for a side road on the left going north.  Continue past the junction driving north east.

About 0.9 miles farther is a junction (TicabooDP-07) for a side road on the right going southwest.  Turn right and follow this side road toward Seven Mile Creek area.

About 700 feet farther is a fork in the road (extWarmSpring).  At this fork stay left to continue toward the East Branch of Seven Mile Creek.

About 0.4 miles farther is another fork in the road (ext7MileCkEB).  Veer right (more south) to continue toward the East Branch of 7 Mile Creek.

About 1.0 mile farther is a junction (7MileCkEBDP-01) where a side road joins in from the left.  Continue straight (south) past the side road.

About 0.5 miles farther is a jog in the road (7MileCkEBDP-02) near an old stock pond.  Turning left leads to a berm with a survey marker by a stock pond.  Veer right to continue south.

As you drive south from the stock pond, the road crosses over some shallow washes.  Park off to the side of the road by the wash that is 0.52 miles past the stock pond (pk7MileEast-1).  There is no obvious spot to park, just park off to the side of the road to allow traffic to pass while you are gone.  Alternately you can park at the other parking spot about 600 feet north of here where another minor drainage crosses the road and is another minor fork of Big East Fork.

To leave the Exit Vehicle / Escape Pod

No exit vehicle is needed.  This is done as a loop route.

Details

The Approach:
From the parking spot (pk7MileEast-1) walk southwest across rolling desert staying just to the north of the minor drainage (the minor drainage will be on your left). Walk about 0.73 miles out to a minor dirt hill near the head of Selfish Fork.

From the minor dirt hill (7mileBEF_19) continue about 500 feet southwest to the top of a the Selfish Fork drainage then about 200 feet farther to the first drop at the head of the canyon (ySelfishFk-Tp).

The Canyoneering / Technical Section:
At the head of the canyon (ySelfishFk-Tp)  is a shelf / drop of about 50 feet. This drop is easily bypassed by scrambling down a weakness on the LDC side about 160 feet down canyon or down a rubble pile on the RDC side.

From the top of the weakness on the LDC side (Selfish01) scramble down into the Selfish Fork just past the drop at the head and continue down canyon.

About 200 feet down canyon is a sloped slickrock trough (Selfish02) to walk down.

About 500 feet farther is a slickrock drop (Selfish03) in the wash that could be scrambled through but is easily missed and walk past on the LDC side since the wash is very wide open.

About 250 feet farther is the upper end (Selfish04) of a shallow walk through V slot about 300 feet long.

From the lower end of the V slot (Selfish05) it is about 170 feet down to rap 1.

Rap 1 (dSelfishR1) is anchored from a chokestone out from the top of the rap and drops about 30 feet into a deep narrow slot. The anchor is a little difficult to stem out to. Be careful of catching the rope in a pinch point if just draping the rope over the chokestone without webbing. The last 8 to 10 feet of the drop is easily downclimbable.

After rap 1 is a deep narrow slot about 200 feet long with a couple 6 foot downclimbs as the walls twist and wind and have the feel of a very committing place but only for about 200 feet.

As the slot opens up again (Selfish06) there is about 850 feet shallow V slot to walk and galumph through down to rap 2.

Rap 2 (dSelfishR2) is anchored from a rock in the wash by a bush and drops over 2 stages of 10 and 50. Using about 75 feet of rope travel. The first stage is into a large pothole and the second stage is down steeply sloped ledges. Mud here could be messy as the clay is slick.

About 350 feet after rap 2 the canyon opens up (Selfish07) to wide wash walking.

A little over 400 feet down canyon is the upper end (Selfish08) of a 350 foot long shallow slot to walk and galumph through.

From the lower end (Selfish09) of a 350 foot long shallow slot to walk and galumph through. it is about 450 feet down to a drop (Selfish10) of about 15 feet easily bypassed by walking the side over and into a cross joint then scrambling down to below the drop. The last 150 feet of the Selfish Fork is downclimbable down into Big East Fork. Downclimbing through this section back down into the Big East Fork is a little spicy.

Note:
If you do not want to downclimb this or just want to exit due to water you can scramble up on the RDC side to meet up with the exit route coming up from Big East Fork.

After downclimbing the deep final section you will be down in Big East Fork (j7mileBEF-Ext).

The Exit:
From the end of Selfish Fork (j7mileBEF-Ext) scramble up the side ravine / rubble ramp running up right next to Selfish Fork. After about 200 feet the grade becomes more gentle and will be less rubble filled. About 200 feet farther you will be able to turn right and scramble up out of the cross joint you are in up onto rolling slick rock.

When the cross joint is shallow enough (7mileBEF_10) to allow you to scramble to the right (northeast) up onto rolling slickrock.

About 140 feet farther is the top of a ridge (7mileBEF_11) you can walk down to get into the wide open wash of the Selfish Fork below. To continue on the exit route continue northeast along rolling slickrock roughly following what feels like the crest of the ridge.

About 650 feet farther the route tops out briefly (7mileBEF_12). Continue northeast down the other side and over to a prominent steep hill about 450 feet away.

When you get to the hill (7mileBEF_13) go part way up the steep hill to here then veer left (north) to work your way out around the steep upper portion. Walk about 200 feet to the left the circle around 200 feet again to get to the other side of the hill where you will see one more hill that you can walk straight up.

On the other side is a survey marker (7Mile-BM-01), continue northeast up the hill.

At the top out of a hill (7mileBEF_14) you now have a good view of the cliff side of the mesa about 700 feet away. Walk over to the cliff band and travel just to the right of it.

When you get to the base of the cliff band (7mileBEF_15) below the mesa top. Walk along the base of the cliff band to the right (southeast) for about 270 feet to the base of a rubble pile to scramble up to the mesa top.

From the bottom of a rubble pile (7mileBEF_16) scramble up to get up on the mesa top.

From the top of the rubble pile (7mileBEF_17) continue northeast back toward the road.

About 0.34 miles farther cross over the shallow drainage (7mileBEF_18) then continue northeast and up the dirt hill to the next level.
This shallow drainage is the top end of the Selfish Fork.

after getting up the small dirt hill (7mileBEF_19) continue northeast toward the road. As you continue you may notice a drainage forming on your right (southish) which is the top of Big East Fork. You can drop back into the drainage if desired and follow it up but travel may be easier staying high and walking the rolling desert to the car (pk7MileEast-1) about 0.75 miles to the northeast.

GPS Waypoint Information

GPX Files Available for DOWNLOAD.
Downloadable GPX files for many of the canyons listed here are now available at the BG-Gear Store.  In addition to the waypoints, the GPX files also offer routes and tracks for the canyon.  Over time more GPX files will be added.

If you want to avoid manually adding waypoints into your GPS or mapping software, want the additional routes and tracks or simply want to support the efforts put into BluuGnome, head over to the BG-Gear Store and grab the files that interest you.

Elevations are approximate.  Waypoints with no elevation data will display NaN in place of the elevation.

If you want to see the remainder of the Big East Fork continue down canyon over one 10 foot drop over a boulder then a mix of walking and light galumphing for about 900 feet to the confluence with Seven Mile Creek. After going to the confluence come back up canyon to here to exit. Caution if you go to the confluence it is easy to walk past it and never notice and find your self walking down main Seven Mile Creek. To Exit: Scramble up the side ravine / rubble ramp. After about 200 feet the grade becomes more gentle and will be less rubble filled. About 200 feet farther you will be able to turn right and scramble up out of the cross joint you are in up onto rolling slick rock. Note: The last 150 feet of the Selfish Fork just above here is downclimbable down to here. For a fun side trip you can go part way up the exit route then drop into the Selfish Fork where it is a wide open wash then down climb through this section back down into the Big East Fork. If on approach to Second Guess Fork walk northwest over into then across to the other side of the shallow drainage above Selfish Fork.

To go down Big East Fork, follow southwest down the minor drainage here or park about 600 feet north of here where another minor drainage crosses the road and is another minor fork of Big East Fork which can also be walked down to enter Big East Fork. Walk southwest down the minor drainage you parked at for about 0.42 miles to the confluence of the two minor drainages. To go to Selfish Fork or Second Guess Fork. Walk southwest across rolling desert staying just to the north of the minor drainage (the minor drainage will be on your left). Walk about 0.73 miles out to a minor dirt hill near the head of Selfish Fork. To go to Little East Fork, ............
